Well been testing receiving mms now for a couple of days, and found out some interesting stuff that really makes me wonder.

When i send from some models to my nowsms the .hdr file writes from who the mms came.
Like this: From: 4561616161/TYPE=PLMN
That is ok.
Now try to send a mms to nowsms from a nokia 3650
There is nothing here about where the message came from???
Can this be right?
How do the phonecompanies see where it came from then?

This is the content of the .hdr file from a Nokia 3650:

Message-type: m-retrieve-conf
Transaction-id: Tdgrqhod1-4561302010
MMS-version: 1.0
Message-class: Personal
Message-size: 10000
X-NowMMS-Content-Location: 3EDDF4CC\27111034.txt
X-NowMMS-Content-Location: 3EDDF4CC\Billede_.jpg
X-NowMMS-Content-Location: 3EDDF4CC\unk3

Please notice that there is nothing of the senders number here.
Another weird thing is that many nokai models does not create the SMIL file with any extension name. Should have been unk3.smil

So i was cursing Nokia far away for not providing any information on who the mms came from, until i came to think if it might be nowsms(mmscomp.exe?) that might not "unpack" it right?
I thought of this because i asked myself that if there is no information in the .hdr file, how does the phonecompany then see where it came from ?

Long one eh?
Hope you can answer this.

Lars,

That's a very interesting observation.

Actually, I'm not sure how much of that is an issue specific to the sending phone, and how much is specific to the MMSC through which the message was sent (although it could be a combination of factors).

It is possible that the "From:" header was only included in the MMS notification, and not the MMS header of the actual MMS message. I have seen that some MMS clients will only read the "From:" field from the MMS notification, and ignore the "From:" field in the header of the MMS message ... so this would explain why it might not otherwise cause a problem.

We've got some work to do in this particular area in preparation for the next release, so I'm going to ask our developers to take a closer look at this, pulling the "From:" out of the MMS notification (if present there), instead of relying only on the header of the MMS message content.

On the other issue ... the lack of a file extension on the SMIL file, I'd be curious to see an SMSDEBUG.LOG that showed the inbound message being processed. If the file name starts with "unk", it means that the file did not have a name associated with it (which is actually somewhat common for how some MMS clients include a SMIL) ... but we should have added the extension.

In case it is specific to the 3650 sending an MMS, I'll check it out on that, but any other information would be helpful.

We are starting our first mms competition today. It is on a smaller website, because we want to see the different ways the phones creates smil, and header information, etc. etc.
So i will be posting all i can into this thread for you to read Bryce.
Hopefully we can all use the information.

I was planning on putting my mms-competition out in this forum as freeware for all nowsms-freaks to use, so that you could all get started working on mms. But because of the many different ways phones creates mms, my scripts are not 100% fullproof. So i will wait with putting anything out here.
As it is now i have to tell the users that they must write their phonenumber in the mms-message. That is the only way that we can see who it is from.
I must say that after testing many phnes now, Nokia are the ones that comes out worse in creating good mms messages, and good smil-coding. Thanx to Panasonic, and their GD87, for being number one in creating good smil and mms ;-).
