Hello All,
I have a requirement in which, I have to send a EMS message (don't worry it goes as SMS) using the CDMA bearer. Now for that I have a LG CDMA phone (MSM chipset), Now can some body elaborate on the procedure, AT commands etc. I have done so using the Nokia 30 GSM modem (they have a beautyfull manual explaning the things). Hoping that some body can help me in finding the equivalent in CDMA case.
Regards
Rahul

Hi Rahul,

EMS in the CDMA environment uses the same format as in the GSM environment.

However, the trick is that you need to have a binary SMS connection that supports SMS.

Unlike the GSM environment, there does not appear to be a standard "AT command set" to be used with CDMA modems for sending/receiving SMS. Various manufacturers seem to have different command sets, some based on the GSM modem commands, others based upon commands defined originally for TDMA.

However, most CDMA modem interfaces (that I have seen), don't have clear definitions for how to set parameters that are important for binary messages.

In particular, sending an EMS message requires that the message be sent using the WEMT teleservice. But there is no equivalent setting in GSM ... so modem interfaces for CDMA that emulate the GSM command set cannot send EMS messages.

If you have access to an SMPP SMSC that is connected to the CDMA network, and that SMSC supports the WEMT teleservice, then it would be possible. (We've been adding some SMPP hooks for CDMA networks into NowSMS v5.50.)

Sending SMS from GSM to CDMA network is possible if your carrier has worked out interconnectivity plans.

For E.g. when Reliance came to India, originally they did not have any tie-ups, hence it was not possible to send/receive SMS to/from other networks, over a year, Reliance now have tie-ups with lot of GSM operators in India and some abroad and sending & receiving SMS is working!

Hope I have answered your question,

Sam

As Sam says, it depends on whether or not your carrier or provider has interoperability agreements with the other CDMA carrier. It's not just a technical issue, it is a commercial issue.

The original question was about EMS ... and generally speaking, even if you can send text messages between GSM and CDMA, I would not expect EMS messages to work unless the interconnection had logic to specifically handle them.

We just added support for EMS in CDMA environments with NowSMS v5.50, but it only functions in SMPP environments where the SMPP service can map an SMPP service_type parameter to the WEMT teleservice for CDMA.
