hi,
I am a newbie so I would like to confirm few things before i go and buy stuff. As far as I have read the forum i think to send sms we need

1] A GSM modem, I heard that these days GSM modems comes with a buildin mobiles like 6210, 7250 etc.
2] we will need some sort of cords to connect this modem to the PC.
3] we will need the nowsms software and then configure it.
4] and one GSM SIM to send sms, if MMS then with the GPRS enabled.

Now my Questions...

Q1. which is the best nokia phone for sending sms and MMS with inbuild GSM modem?
Q2 what are the cords needed? will they come along with the phone?
Q3. What about CDMA modems? can we use them to send sms?

Please help

Hi Jaunty,

Q1 - The 7210/7250/6220/6820 are all pretty similar.

I actually have a slight preference for SonyEricsson phones over Nokia phones as modems, where for the SE phones, the T68/T68i/T610/T630 are all good choices. The SE phones have options for serial or USB cables, or can be used with bluetooth. Whereas the Nokia phones only support USB, and only a few support the modem interface over bluetooth.

Q2 - No, generally the data cable must be purchased separately. Refer to the manufacturer web site for the appropriate cable to go with a particular phone as the connectors can be somewhat different on different phone models. For Nokia phones, note that for generic cables, there are two different types of cables ... and you want the type of cable that allows you to use the phone as a data modem. (The Nokia manufacturered cables support both modes these days, but the generic cables are sometimes only for LogoManager which uses a different protocol.)

Q3 - There doesn't really seem to be a standard for modem interfaces in the CDMA world. Some CDMA modems partially implement the GSM modem commands, others use a proprietary command set.

If your GSM operator has SMS interoperability with the CDMA operator, you can use the GSM modem to send text messages to the CDMA recipients.
