I want know the best GSM modems to use to receive SMS messages.

I currently have a GSM phone that has a SIM card and I wanted to know if }I just use that SIM card for my GSM modem so that it would use the same number/account as my celluar phone. I am just a bit confused on how to configure a GSM modem to a certain number and also if only certain carriers allow you to use GSM modems.

Thank you for your time

Hi Navid,

Yes, you generally can just take the SIM card out of a phone and place it into the modem. That's what I do, especially when I am testing many different modems.

I don't have any experience with the Nokia D311 yet ... but I know that the Nokia D211 did not support receiving SMS messages on the GSM modem interface, only sending.

It looks like the D311 is just the D211, but adapted for the GSM frequencies in North America (GSM 850/1900 as Marc mentions). Looking at the Nokia site, I don't see a separate user manual for the D311, just the same old D211 user manual, so unfortunately, I suspect this modem has the same limitation of not being able to receive SMS messages over the GSM modem interface.

This limitation is only documented in a footnote within the Developer Manual for the D211 which you can download from www.forum.nokia.com. On pages 71 and 73 it states, "Note: SMS cannot be controlled using AT command because the Nokia D211 SMS application (Nokia Short Messaging) controls them."

So the D211/D311 is fine for sending SMS, but not for receiving SMS, unless you want to read the received messages in the Nokia application.

A good alternative is the Sierra Wireless Aircard 750.

Hey Bryce

I found the manual for the D311. The manual says that this card supports AT commands. Could you confirm that this card works with NowSMS by checking out this manual?

thank you

Hi Navid,

Unfortunately that user guide doesn't go into any technical detail on the AT command implementation. But I do suspect that the D311 is very similar to the D211 which has been available in Europe for some time.

On the www.forum.nokia.com web site, when you search on technical information for the D311, you are directed to the guides for the D211.

The D211 is fine for sending SMS messages, but not for receiving SMS messages. It can receive SMS messages, but the received SMS messages are stored in a software application that ships with the modem, and are not accessible over the AT command interface. So basically, only the AT command related to sending are supported.

I've tried the D211 and confirmed this ... it was fine for sending, but received SMS messages were routed directly to the SMS application and not forwarded over the modem interface. There was no way to disable this behaviour. (Of course, it was only after I purchased a D211 for testing that I then found the reference to the technical guide that told me that receiving SMS via AT commands was not possible with the D211.) You could always try it with the D311, but I expect you would experience the same issue.

Hi, Navid.

I want to buy a modem but I don´t know what is the best, can you send and receive SMS in your D311 MODEM now?

Note. My operator have a NOKIA GSM network with 850 frequency.

Thanks,

Options are pretty limited on the GSM 850 frequency.

Are you in the US on the Cingular network? (I'm asking out of curiosity, wondering if there are other operators also on GSM 850.)

You could use a mobile phone as a modem, like the SonyEricsson T637. (Send and receive SMS ok, send MMS ok ... but you cannot receive MMS over the modem.)

For a dedicated GSM modem device, Multitech has a North American version of their modem which operates on 850/1900 frequencies. However, I have not had any experience with that device.

I can send and receive SMS messages using the Cingular software but the D311 cannot be controlled by NowSMS. Atleast that is the experience that I have had with it.

This may work:

1. Unplug the Nokia card
2. Remove all traces of Nokia software from your PC (you might have to manually clean up the registry and find and manually delete the corresponding oemxxx.inf file)
3. Reboot
4. Insert the Nokia card and follow instructions to install it as "Standard PCMCIA Modem"
5. Reboot
6. Add the modem in NowSMS and try receiving messages with it.

The trick has worked with older Nokia card (RPM-1) and solved some issues with Novatel G201 card.

Another important suggestion:

When selecting your GSM modem (regardless of the application u're running) consider ther following:

1. The fastest PC card, without a doubt, is Sierra Aircard 750. It sends a message in less than 3 seconds. However, I wasn't able to install more than one Sierra card in the same PC.

2. There's no such limitation with the next contender - Novatel Merlin G201. It scores 4 seconds, but has a strange habit of falling into "Sleep" mode. Connecting a com-port sniffer such as Portmon and having it run continuousky solves the problem. Don't forget to limit the "History Depth" in the sniffer, or you'll have a memory leak.

3. Nokia and Ericsson cards are the slowest - about 6 seconds. Ericsson is the worst in terms of stability.

5. If you're receiving any significant number of messages, or delivery receipts - forget about PC cards and most of the external GSM modems! These devices don't have internal memory other than what's on the SIM-card. Receiving messages interferes with outbound traffic, which generates a tremendous number of errors and often freezes the modems completely. Go with an older handset, such as Ericsson R380 or T39m with a COM or USB cable. I've had these two performing an amazing job while sending through an external SMS server. The server would accept one message and send it to seven receipients at once. My Ericsson phones were receiving 7 delivery receipts per one SMS sent, without a hitch! The error rate was about one in 400-700 messages sent. I think there are some Falcom external modems with memory and I assume they'd be faster than Ericsson handsets, but for a price of 1 Falcom you can get 10 R320 handsets...

Hope this helps
