Hi,

Could you tell me what is the different between the audio/rmf, audio/x-rmf, audio/x-beatnik-rmf MIME types? Does the player play all *.rmf files independent of its MIME type?

Thank you
Laszlo

Hi Laszlo,

MIME types can be a strange game.

Essentially, those MIME types are all aliases for the same content type.

The "x-" header indicates that it is an experimental (non-standardised) type. But many of those experimental types have been in widespread use before they get a standarised MIME type name.

Looking at some different UAProf files for different devices, I would recommend that if you are sending RMF content, you specify a MIME type of "audio/rmf". Most devices that support RMF will also recognise "audio/x-rmf", but the "audio/x-beatnik-rmf" type is not very widely used.

In the PC world, applications usually determine the content type of a file based upon the file extension (e.g., *.rmf). But in the internet world (and WAP/MMS), the MIME type is more important.
