Hello!

Will the receiver get charged if i use NowSMS gateway to send sms to some networks that receiver pays for sms. Like in USA, both sender and receiver pay for sending sms.

Thanks in advance

Hello Sopheap,

Keep in mind that NowSMS is a software solution, it's not a service. So how things are charged depends on the service(s) to which you connect to deliver messages.

Charging the receiver (I'll get to the US model in a minute) is generally known as "premium rate" SMS. You need to have a special type of account with a service provider in order to support this. Most customers who are using premium rate SMS with NowSMS have multiple SMSC connections defined in NowSMS ... one (or more) for regular SMS, and one (or more) for premium rate SMS. They route messages to the premium rate SMS connection by specifying a special sender address when submitting a message to NowSMS (the sender address configured as the default sender address for that SMSC).

Back to the US ...

In most of the world, except when premium rate SMS is used, the sender pays for the SMS message to be delivered.

In the US, both the sender and receiver pay for an SMS message to be delivered. Even if the message originated outside of the US and the sender payed exorbitant fees (20p on many UK networks for mobile originated SMS to foreign networks), the receiver in the US is still going to get charged.

The good news in the US is that most subscribers are on plans that include some number of free received SMS messages, so billing disputes have not become too common YET. (For example, on T-Mobile in the US, a basic plan includes 50 receive SMS messages. If you have GPRS on the account, then you get 300 free send or receive SMS messages in addition. There is also a $2.99/month option that can be added to give 500 more free send or receive SMS messages per month. For messages beyond the limit, it is $0.05 per SMS to send or receive. Other service providers in the US are in the same general ballpark with pricing.)
