Hello,
I tried sending messages[2D barcodes] with the nowsms EMS web interface and the message delivered to an old nokia phone, also to some new low grade phones without camera but when sent to any series 60 phone, it gets delivered, the phone sees it as a picture message but when i try to open it it says message cant open, file format not supported.
I used both smart messaging functionalities and the EMS functionality and the result was the same[same message format not supported]. If any one has encountered this issue and have a solution do help out.
Thanks

Hi,

I did a little investigating on this.

And it seems that the Series 60 has some issues with different sizes of images.

From what I can tell, 72 x 28 is a standard image size in Nokia picture messaging. A Series 60 phone has no problem displaying an image of that size.

I tried some other sizes, and some worked ... some didn't.

It's not really clear to me what the pattern is.

But I'd suggest using a size of 72 x 28 as that is what Nokia seems to be expecting.

Hmmm,
Its very interesting that 72X28 may be the default, we tried 48x48 and we are yet to try 72x28.
If you are sure it works on series 60 phones may i ask which of the nokia series 60 phones did you try it on? we tried 6600,6680 and E-series phones. Most of the E-Series if not all are series 60 3rd generation models.
Do let me know the pnones you tried it on.
Thanks

> I only tried it on an N95. First I tried 40x40...didn't work. Tried > 40x20...worked. Tried a few other sizes with mixed results.

Then I did some searching and found others with strange issues where some sizes work...some don't.

Nokia examples seem to use 72x28 as a standard size ... and that seemed to be a working size. I'm not sure why this would be, other than it was the standard size for one of the image types used in old Nokia phones.

I can try testing on more phones when in the office tomorrow...provided I can find the right charger. I had to dig through a drawer full of Nokia chargers for 15 minutes to find the charger that fit the N95....

I'd suggest you try some test images at that size with the phones you have been having problems with.

Des,
Thanks for helping out. Do you know of any bulk SMS gateway that support sending of binaries[picture messages] that can be used alongside your sms engine. Most of the ones we have signed up with claim they do only to find out that otherwise. I'll keep testing also with the 'Default' size and others to get around establishing whic is what.
Thanks.

Hi Dele,

With the bulk providers, what formats are supported tend to vary by country.

So the providers you are talking to may have binary paths to other countries, but not to your destination country.

When you run into this type of situation, you usually end up having to pay a little more to deal with someone who deals with more specialised types of traffic.

Try looking for providers local to your country with direct links to your operators.

Hi,
I noticed that the send EMS web interface does not have the ability to append other details with the picture message. Example is i intend sending a barcode and need to leave a clear text info that the message should not be deleted and cant find where that can be achieved.
can anyone help out with this.

Hi Dele,

It isn't in the web interface, but it is supported via direct URL parameters.

The reason for this inconsistency is because while it works great for the Nokia picture message format, when sending out text and an image in the actual EMS format, most EMS phones ignore the text completely.

I'll go ahead and send you an update to the HTML template which lets you put a text field into the web form, so that you can see how it works.

Save the attached "Send EMS Picture Message.htm" file to replace the existing copy in your NowSMS\HTML directory.

text/htmlSend EMS Picture Message.htm
Send EMS Picture Message.htm (13.6 k)

Des,
Thanks for past support. However i tried sending an EMS message[picture message, not nokia smart messaging] to a Sony Ericsson phone but the EMS web interface keeps saying message too large. I tried sending an 8 x 8 message and it was the same message..."Picture is too large for selected output format".
Can you advice on the size to be sent for ordinary EMS messages.

I tried sending to a blackberry phone accidentally using nokia smart messaging from the web interface and the text showed but not the picture image. How do we achieve sending to blackberry phones?

I used the same 72x28 test image that I used before, and it worked just fine for sending in EMS format. I didn't get an error message.

However, the user interface for EMS images is not very friendly on SonyEricsson phones. When you receive the image, you are asked if you want to save it, and if you don't, the phone tells you that the image will be deleted.

Most newer SonyEricsson phones support the Nokia Smart Message format, and that works better.

Regarding the Blackberry, to the best of my knowledge, it does not support either EMS or Nokia Smart Messaging.

If you want to reliably send images, MMS is the way to go.

Or, multimedia content push where you send a text message (or WAP push) that points to a web link with the content.
