Hi Support team, currently I have a Sony Ericsson T637 sending and receiving SMS messages. It works great, but can only send 1 message every 8 seconds or so. I would like to send messages faster and am currently looking at purchasing one of these dedicated modems:

1) Falcom Samba 75 USB GSM/GPRS/EDGE modem
2) Falcom Samba3G UMTS/HSDPA
3) Multitech MultiModem GPRS
4) Multitech MultiModem EDGE

I am on the Rogers Network in Canada and according to their coverage, have: GSM/GPRS/EDGE/HSPA. I don't mind spending a bit more money but want to know if there are any difference in SMS transmission times between GPRS, EDGE and HSPA. I will be stricly sending and recieving SMS only. Which one of these modems do you think will be the fastest?

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

I've been a bit skeptical about 3G modems. They obviously make sense for MMS, but for SMS?

Theoretically there shouldn't be much difference for SMS performance ... if the operator supports SMS over packet switching (which most don't).

And the early 3G modems had bugs (requiring you to manually configure the operator SMSC address) or were quirky to configure (Sierra Wireless 3G modems are definitely in this latter category).

But what we're seeing now is that the 3G modems are more stable now.

And while there shouldn't be any performance difference with SMS over packet switching, SMS over circuit switching does seem faster on 3G.

Your mileage may vary as it will depend on operator configuration issues ... signal strength ... etc.

That said, I've used the Falcom Samba 75 quite a bit, but not the 3G model.

I've been using a Huawei 3G modem that we got with a T-Mobile UK web'n'walk account, and it works reasonably well.

We've also seen a lot of people using the Option GlobeTrotter, now branded ICON, 3G modems. I've got one on order that I plan to use for testing, as they seem to be quite popular these days.

I think I'd lean toward a 3G model ... as long as it also supports GPRS/EDGE.

If you need to downgrade the modem to GPRS/EDGE, this is possible by adding this setting under the [Modem - Driver Name] section in SMSGW.INI:

CommandPostInit1=AT+WS46=12

Des, thank-you very much for your response.
I'm still a bit new to this so I was a little confused. I called Rogers and they sell their "Rocket Stick" which is actually a ZTE MF636 USB Modem. It handles 3G and my provider says it can send and receive SMS messages. Do you know if this device will work with NowSMS?

Thanks again,
Tony

Hi Tony,

I've been searching for detailed technical information about that modem, but haven't had much luck.

I have found information about ZTE modem modules, which are chipsets and building blocks for building the modems ... and they appear to have all of the necessary command support.

So I think the probability is very good that it would work, I just can't say for certain.

I've been testing an Option ICON 322 for the past 24 hours, and I've been very pleased with how well it performs.

Hi Des,
Thanks for going through the trouble of looking into it. That brand/model is what Rogers had on their website. I went there today to pick one up and brought it home. The GSM modem is actually called: Novatel Wireless Ovation HSDPA Modem, model MC950D. To say I'm pleased with it is an understatement. It was recognized instantly and for SMS it's now sending a message every 2 seconds. That's about 4 times faster than my Sony Ericson.

Thanks again for your help.
Cheers,
Tony

Thanks for the feedback Tony .... it is funny how the modem that they sell in the stores doesn't always match the one they sell on their web sites.

I didn't realise that Novatel had any of these USB stick modems. I regularly used one of their ExpressCard models for a year or so, and it was quite good.

Cheers,

Des
