Hi Vivek, Sorry for not responding to your message arlier. However, I do not understand what you are asking.
What do you mean by this? -- Des NowSMS Support

It sounds like he wants to send his SMS messages via GRPS instead of through the slower method of GSM. Is there an answer for this?

The quick answer is that most mobile network operators do not have SMS over GPRS support enabled. We know of several cases where operators had it enabled at one point in time, but later disabled it. In NowSMS, there is a configuration option, "SMS Access", which can be set to either "GSM" or "GPRS". (The "Default" setting leaves the setting at the default preference of the modem.) These settings are a little misnamed, as they also apply to EDGE and 3G networks. The "GSM" setting uses the circuit switched network, the "GPRS" setting uses the packet switched network. In either case, if you set NowSMS to use "GPRS", NowSMS sends a command to the modem to tell it to prefer using GPRS, but fall back to GSM if GPRS is not available. In my experience, in most situations, if the operator does not support SMS over GPRS, most modems will not reliably fall back to GSM. They will report sending errors. If you want to experiment with forcing your modem to only use GPRS you can manually edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [Modem - your modem name] section header, add CommandPostInit1=AT+CGSMS=0 Then restart the NowSMS service. That command will tell the modem to only use GPRS for sending SMS. It is similar to the setting that NowSMS uses when you check "GPRS" for "SMS Access", except that the modem is not supposed to ever fall back to GSM ... only to report errors if it cannot send. Unfortunately, we rarely see any network operators supporting SMS over GPRS these days. But if you're looking for speed, you might want to look at different modems. I've been surprised that some of the newer USB stick modems are actually quite a bit faster in sending messages, even if they have to go over the circuit-switched network. I've been using an Option ICON 322 for the past few weeks, which takes 2 to 3 seconds per message (depending on the time of day). In another thread, someone was getting similar speed out of a Novatel MC950D. -- Des NowSMS Support

Hi, This is really useful info. It would be good if you updated the bulletin about SMS via GPRS to say something about the lack of carrier support. thanks, -Ray |
