I have been conducting some test with NowSMS trying to figure out how to get the most speed out of my GPRS modems. Currently I have 3 modems and each yield about 13 msgs per minute. I've tried sending SMS over GPRS but I get errors. I have experimented with sending MMS messages with limited success in terms of throughput. It seems if the messages are addressed to multiple people via MMS the message only will get submitted once to the MMSC but delivered to everyone. However when the messages goes to all recipients, everyone can see everyone's phone number. Nonetheless, I have a USB modem used by the service provider Cricket (CDMA network). I know you can send SMS messages over GPRS/EDGE because it comes with software that allows you to connect a computer to the Internet and send SMS text messages simultaneously. Will this USB modem work with NowSMS? (UTStarcom UM100C) If this is unknown to work are there other modems that you guys know of that will work in the US with NowSMS? John | |||

Hi John, I'd be surprised if the CDMA modem will work. Unfortunately, there's no standard API for SMS via a modem in the CDMA environments. A few manufacturers have implemented a subset of the GSM modem API, but most CDMA modems don't. The Option ICON 322 modem that I mentioned in the other thread that you asked a similar question on (http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/41678.html) is available for around $80 on Amazon. I had a chance to try it in the US on T-Mobile, it averaged around 20 messages per minute. -- Des NowSMS Support | |||

Hi John, More information for you regarding the MMS recipients seeing everyone else's phone numbers. I forgot about a configuration setting that can force all messages to go out with recipients specified as BCC ... but another discussion thread reminded me. It is possible to edit the settings for the outbound route to force all recipients to be sent as BCC. To do this, edit VASPOUT\accountname\VASP.INI, and under the [VASP] header, add ForceBcc=Yes. Thank you for answering my questions. I really appreciate how quick and thorough you guys are at answering questions. One thing about the MMS tests I've done... If you're sending MMS messages to a group of ten people via the (TO  field it is fast. In fact, if you are sending to 20 people that way it seems to be just as fast (taking the same amount of time). The down side for me is that everyone phone number is exposed at least on the iphone. Other phones onlly show the original sender. This way of sending it defined as a group MMS. If you just via the CC: or BCC: the system send each message to each person so it's slower much like SMS. Is there a technical reason for this? John | |||

Hi John, If you use the ForceBcc=Yes setting, it should work the same as if the recipients are "To" recipients. The only difference is that the MMS message header specifies the recipients as "Bcc". By default, for an MM1 connection like this, NowSMS groups the recipients into batches of 5 at a time for submission. 5 is not a hard limit. We've just found through trial and error that different operator MMSCs have different limits on the maximum number of recipients per MMS. We encountered a few that limited it to 5, so we set that as a default. You can adjust this value similar to how the ForceBcc=Yes setting is applied. Edit VASPOUT\accountname\VASP.INI, and under the [VASP] header, add MaxRecips=##, where ## is the maximum number of recipients to allow per submission.
