I know that there are two main umbrellas for content called smart messaging which is create by Nokia, and EMS that is created by Erricson. However, most of other phone brands follow one of the above metioned. Can you please tell me which brands follow the smart messaging and which follow the EMS.

EMS was originally defined by (Sony)Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens and Alcatel. But it is also a part of the official SMS standards, and has been adopted by many other manufacturers as well. Unfortunately, you have to query manufacturers web sites to determine what models support MMS. EMS was developed as a response to Nokia Smart Messaging, which was proprietary to Nokia. Samsung licensed Nokia Smart Messaging, and implemented it in some of their phones, but is also implementing EMS in most of their newer phones. Nokia then opened up Smart Messaging, and some other vendors, like SonyEricsson have added limited support for Nokia Smart Messaging in some of their newer handsets. The challenge is that there are so many phone models from each manufacturer that you really have to check the specs for specific phone models.

Yes, but there are a few good assumptions: 1.) I wouldn't count on phones other than Nokia understanding Nokia Smart Messaging. You might get lucky with a few odd phones supporting some Nokia Smart Messaging functionality, but don't count on it. 2.) EMS is the alternative standard, but it is not supported by every phone by every manufacturer. 3.) If a phone has a colour screen, you're probably better off sending image content with WAP push (GIF/JPEG formats). 4.) EMS and Nokia Smart Messaging only enable very simple types of ring tones. For a lot of newer phones, you'll want to use MIDI (sent via WAP push). And there are a bunch of alternate formats for ring tones on various different phones ... |
