Hi Des,

I see you have been recommending the Option ICON 322 as a fast GSM modem.

I found at Tiger Direct that they sell these modems unlocked for $85.

The modem has an AT&T logo on it and it installs some AT&T software.

But I want to use it with T-Mobile (even though it does not support T-Mobile 3G frequency, I want to see if it is faster on GPRS/EDGE).

The AT&T software keeps trying to connect and complaining about the SIM card.

Do you have any ideas, or should I return it because it must not be unlocked?

Thanks!

Hi,

I would definitely uninstall the AT&T software.

It's convenient that these USB stick modems have software on them that auto-installs, but inconvenient that a lot of them are special operator branded.

Uninstall the AT&T software and download the generic software from the Option web site at http://www.option.com/en/support/

Let me know how it goes for you. $85 is a very good price for this modem.

Worked a treat!

I did have to click on a "More" button and uncheck "Auto-connect", but that was it.

I need to test some more, but I do seem to be seeing it take between 2 and 3 seconds to send an SMS, which is good because the Multitech modem I have been using is more like 6 to 8 seconds.

Thanks!

I noticed something strange.

I took the modem home to experiment with it last night, and I consistently was in the 2 to 3 second range to send an SMS.

At work today, it is back in the 5 second range ... still an improvement, but not as significant.

Maybe it is a question of when the peak times are for traffic on the operator SMSC?
