Hi,
I have loaded the software and sending SMS, binary SMS and WAP push works, but sending MMS to Nokia 7650 results in the handset saying that it is retrieving the message...connecting via GPRS...and then giving the tone for a new message. However when I check for the new message the inbox is empty!
Any ideas?

Tim,

It is likely that the MMS settings in your phone connect to a WAP gateway that either:

1.) will only connect to the operator MMSC.

2.) does not support Segmentation and Re-assembly (SAR).

When there is a problem, #1 is the most common problem.

Some operators have configured special GPRS access point names for MMS traffic, where when you connect via that APN you can only connect to a particular WAP gateway, and that WAP gateway can only connect to internal operator addresses.

Orange UK has a setup like this.

Basically, you need to change the WAP profile associated with MMS to connect to a more flexible APN and/or WAP gateway.

If you have working WAP settings for WAP browsing, you can usually use those same settings for the WAP profile that is used for MMS.

I say usually, because the case with Orange UK is that when you try to use their regular WAP gateway, their regular WAP gateway does not support SAR. If you run into that situation, you need to connect with a GPRS APN that supports open internet connectivity, and then connect to a WAP gateway external to the operator (we run one at 213.48.20.10 that can be used for this purpose).

If this all seems a bit confusing ... reply back to tell us what operator you are using, and we're putting together a database of settings related to different operators ... which we can probably use to help you out.

Hi,

Thanks for the speedy reply...I'm using Voda in the UK. I'll change to the GPRS internet setting that I use for email access and see if that works!

Tim,

We usually don't see any problems with Vodafone UK.

If you have access to their internet APN (which it sounds like you do since you have direct e-mail access), then you can use:

GPRS APN: internet
username: web
password: web
WAP Gateway: 213.48.20.10
(no username/password required for WAP gw)

If you don't have access to their internet APN, you can use their standard WAP settings:

GPRS APN: wap.vodafone.co.uk
username: user@vodafone.net
password: user
WAP Gateway: 212.183.137.12
(no username/password required for WAP gw)

Hi,

I'm using the second one (wap) and I still just receive the message tone but not the message. I am able to receive messages normally through Voda. Could I have configured the MMSC incorrectly?

Any help around the MMS configuration would be great. I have installed IIS on port 90 and have MMSC on port 80. Is there anything special that I need to do in IIS? It's a product that I have not used before!

Thanks

Tim

Tim,

The MMSC configuration on the phone really only comes into play when you send a message from the phone.

Having the MMSC on port 80 is right (I forgot that with Vodafone's WAP gateway you have to have the MMSC on port 80).

We don't use IIS (although you might if you use "Send MMS Notification" point to a file on IIS) ... but you could run into an issue there that the Vodafone WAP gateway won't fetch content (including MMS content) from other than port 80.

How about trying the internet APN setting, and when you reply back, I'll look at our WAP gateway log and maybe that will tell us something.

Hi,

I don't seem to be able to select an internet AP from the MMS setting menu, just wap Aps.

It's strange because the phone says receiving message and establishes a GPRS connection for some time. It seems like it's receiving the message, it even makes the right noises! But for some reason the message doesn't actually ever get into the inbox...

Are there any other settings on the NowSMS configuration side that would make a difference?

Tim.

Tim,

Since I don't have a 7650 in front of me, it might be easiest to use WAP OTA in the gateway to send settings out to the phone, especially since you've got WAP Push working.

Go into the web menu interface for NowSMS ... select WAP OTA Settings.

Connection type = GPRS
Phone number to receive settings = your phone#
GPRS Access point name = internet
GPRS login parameters = automatic
GPRS user name = web
GPRS password = web
GPRS login type = Standard (PAP)
WAP Gateway IP = 213.48.20.10
WAP gateway login parameters = automatic
WAP gateway username/password = (leave blank)
WAP gateway connection type = connection-oriented
Settings Name = Voda NowGW
Home page URL = http://mms.now.co.uk/index.wml
MMS URL = http://yourmmscip/username=password

That should create a new profile on your phone called Voda NowGW. Try that.
