Hi, I'm two days into a trial of NowSMS, but haven't been able to get it to send an SMS.

My SMPP provider is clickatell.com (also on trial), and I can connect to their server OK - I get the "connection OK" message box, and I see network traffic as it authenticates.

But when I go to submit a simple SMS, nothing happens. The NowSMS service doesn't even attempt to transmit any data to the server. I know this because I sniff my local LAN to see the traffic.

I've tried what I think is their preferred numbering format - 447900xxxxxx, plus 07900xxxxxx, +447900xxxxxx, all with no luck - no traffic, no events in the event log, no nothing. The web server says "Message Committed" but I think it's fibbing.

I haven't tried a binary SMS or WAP push or anything yet.

I *have* tinkered with all the SMPP connection settings - V3.3/3.4, changing sender address and whatever else I could.

So, does NowSMS spool/cache messages? I reckon I should see traffic pretty much straight away when I click send.

Any other clues? Thanks.

Tony,

If you see absolutely no network traffic, then the only thing that I can think of is that if you go to the "SMSC" page of the configuration dialog, highlight the SMPP definition, and click "Properties", then you should make sure that "Support any outbound message traffic" is checked.

Otherwise, the messages will be sitting in a queue (subdirectory named "Q"), without any outbound SMSCs enabled.

If that is not it, then it sounds like the gateway might think that messages are going out. I haven't used Clickatell's SMPP interface yet, only their HTTP interface ... so I'm not as familiar with it.

But probably the best thing for troubleshooting would be to enable the debug logs in NowSMS, and then we could take a look at them.

Manually edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [SMSGW] section header, add Debug=Yes. Then restart the NowSMS service.

Repeat your attempt to send a message ... and e-mail the SMSDEBUG.LOG and SMPPDEBUG.LOG to nowsms@now.co.uk, so that we can take a look to see what is going on.

Thanks Bryce, that's handy info.

Funnily enough, I don't know what changed, but I shut down my machine one night, and all of a sudden, I got 10 SMSs within 30sec, so they were queued somewhere on my machine, and something changed and they all got through.

Now I've bought more credits I'll try again :-)

Tony,

My suspicion would be that a configuration change was made without restarting the gateway service.

Normally it would prompt you that settings had been changed, and ask if you wanted to restart the service. But maybe you missed that message?

At least that's about the only explanation that I could think of.
