We have an AT&T USBConnect Mercury Card...Installed on a laptop running Windows 7.

For this card, there is an issue with virtual com ports being assigned: http://blog.nowsms.com/2009/09/send-and-receive-sms-and-mms-with_225.html

That is OK, we have identified the COM port that we need for AT commands (which works in the full version)........

The SMSNow is running as a service with status : All Connections OK.

** I can successfully receive SMS messages, but CANNOT send.

When I do send, I receive CMS error 500.

Now I can receive messages and the watcher utility show 3 of 5 bars....so the reception shouldn’t be the issue. I set the mode to GSM, GPRS, default...nothing. I have my SMSC for AT&T (7045020600)

How can I send SMS?

ok...We just got off the phone with AT&T and they said that outgoing SMS cannot be sent over this "Data Only" modem. Every SMS is transferred into email format (so it can ride the data network)

Is this something that any of you seen before? If so, how can I configure the system to send? Is this where SMPP comes into play?

Hi,

Are you using a SIM card that is part of a data plan with the modem?

Mobile operators don't understand that you might use a modem for messaging instead of (or in addition to) internet access, so some operators disable messaging functionality, and they provision the account associated with the SIM card without messaging access.

What if you take a SIM out of a phone and put it into the modem?

Similarly test the SIM from the modem in a phone, and see if you can send/receive SMS ok with it.

Basically, you want to figure out if the issue is with the SIM card or with the device.

I also seem to recall an issue where a modem (I'm not sure if it was this one or not) would report an error for sending SMS if the modem was actively being used for internet connectivity. So if the modem software is configured to automatically launch a data connection, that could be a problem.

Are you using the generic Sierra software mentioned in the article instead of the AT&T branded software?

Des,

Thanks for the Reply!

We pulled an AT&T SIM card out of an AT&T iPhone....put it in the modem, and everything now works!

So the limitation is with the AT&T SIM that came with the modem........is there any way around this?

In other words...Now knowing that the SIM is definitely the issue, is there any configurations from within NowSMS that can bypass this?

Thanks again Des!!

It's not really a limitation with the SIM card itself, it's a limitation with how it is provisioned (what services it is subscribed to) on the mobile operator side.

However, finding someone that understands this at a mobile operator is challenging.

We usually recommend using unlocked modems and SIM cards that are provisioned under regular phone plans. This is because the operators assume that modem SIMs will be used primarily for internet access, while phone SIMs will be used primarily for voice and messaging, with internet access (if any) secondary.

I'm not familiar with AT&T's plans, but SMS capability should be standard with the modem.

I found the following AT&T/Sierra Wireless Getting Started Guide:

http://www.sierrawireless.com/resources/documents/support/2130981_AT&T_Mercury_( C885)_GSG_r1.1.pdf

See point 6 about the "Text Messages Button" in the standard software, which should allow you to both send and receive SMS text messages. It even makes a point about saying that text messages will be sent and received through your LaptopConnect phone number.

So according to their documentation, you should be able to send and receive text messages with the bundled software. I'd start there, as they should be able to understand that when you talk to them.

That said .. you'd probably be better off with a SIM card that has a voice plan, unlimited SMS, and minimal internet access.

Good luck!
