Will NowSMS work with a locked Sierra Wireless Compass 885 USB Modem on the AT&T network using an AT&T sim with unlimited data and SMS? What about with a AT&T sim with unlimited SMS and no data? | |||

Hi Clint, We generally don't test with locked modems because they are inconvenient for testing (we'd have to buy contracts for each modem we want to test). That said, from a technical perspective, a locked modem should not function any differently from an unlocked modem. The locked modem is just restricted to a SIM card from that particular operator. The problem that you can encounter with a locked modem is that the mobile operator assumes that you will be using the modem for internet access. Frequently, we find that MMS access is not provisioned for these SIMs, because the mobile operator does not understand that you can send MMS with a modem. And frequently, unlimited SMS is not offered on a SIM card provisioned for a modem, because the operator does not see SMS as a use case for a modem. (I don't know whether or not this is the case with AT&T.) Unlocked modems can cost a little more upfront, but they tend to be less expensive in the long run, and they offer you more flexibility. If you go the locked modem route, I would not expect any technical problems between NowSMS and the modem. However, you need to make sure that the plan that you will be locked into with the SIM card that comes with the modem is appropriate for your needs. To answer another part of your question, a data plan is not required for sending SMS.
