Hello.
I've read the related material on this forum regarding Nokia Smart Messaging and EMS, and I still can't understand whether Samsung accepts smart messaging, or it only works with EMS.

If the EMS is the only way to send binary data to these phone, how one can know which format should be sent to a specific number? You can't keep a table of all phone models in the country, can you?

Also, are there ane Samsung phone models available that support sending of binary data via smart messaging? I've seen someone mentioned this fact, but couldn't find any list of such models.

Thanks in advance.

Well, nobody said it was easy. You'll notice that most ringtone sites have separate instructions for people with different phones.
People are generally asked to select their type of mobile phone when they sign up for the service, there is not a master list.

Also, keep in mind that when you're talking about both EMS and Nokia Smart Messaging, you're talking about older technologies. You're talking about monochrome (black & white) images, and monophonic ring tones. Granted, there is good business in this, but more and more of the phones sold have colour screens and support more sophisticated ring tone types. These more sophisticated images and ring tones are sent with WAP Push or MMS.

Regarding Samsung and Nokia Smart Messaging ... basically Nokia introduced Smart Messaging in 1997 before any of the other manufacturers had a way to send ringtones or images to a mobile phone. And Nokia decided to make their specification proprietary, demanding a royalty of any other manufacturer that wanted to support it.

Samsung is the only major manufacturer that I'm aware of who signed a license for it.

Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens and Alcatel got together and defined EMS as an alternative. Eventually EMS entered the GSM standards track with ETSI and 3GPP.

As EMS got further along, Samsung started also implementing EMS in their handsets. So you have some Samsung handsets with Nokia Smart Messaging Support, some with EMS support, some with support for both, and some (mostly older models) with no support.

I don't have a list. Basically, you can check specifications on manufacturer's web sites (for example, a Google search on Samsung Nokia Smart Messaging will help you find which models have this support).

It is also worth noting that since Nokia has opened up the licensing for Smart Messaging, some other vendors have licensed part of it. I've noticed that many recent SonyEricsson's support ringtones and simple picture messages in Nokia Smart Messaging format.

Thanks a lot for an explanation.
Now the whole subject is much clearer to me.

If I implenent Nokia's Smart Messaging on a handset, do I need a formal license from NOKIA?
If so, where do I get this related information, terms and conditions, etc?

Only your attorneys can answer that question.

When you download the specification from the Nokia web site, the following is displayed:

http://www.forum.nokia.com/files/nds_disclaimer/1%2C6673%2C5233%2C00.html

That said, while the above implies that a license is required, my understanding is that the license is free. Just because it is free does not mean that you do not require a license.
