Hi-

I have a newbie question. We are awaiting the arrival of a MultiTech GPRS modem. My question is do we need a text AND internet/Web plan from T-Mobile or just Text? We plan on sending/recieving sms and mms messages.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Alex,

Different carriers have different plans. However, most internet/web plans tend to not have good text plan options. They assume that you are using the device for internet/web connectivity, and if you do send text, they charge per text, without offering plan options for a bucket of texts.

By contrast, voice plans are targeted toward typical mobile phone users and tend to have plan options for a bucket of texts and/or MMS messages.

So in most cases, you're better off with a voice plan that has an add-on for text and MMS messaging.

NowSMS doesn't use any internet/web data. The only data that it does use is for connecting to the MMSC. Some carriers might not allow you to use MMS unless you also have an internet/web option enabled on your plan. It's a good idea to test the SIM that you plan to use in a phone first and verify that you can send/receive SMS and MMS before trying the SIM in a modem.
