I have a query which might easily be answered in this forum prior to contacting mobile network operators across Europe and getting inconsistent information.

We want to provide MMS content to mobile phone users. Currently we are looking at the UK and German market to be expanded across Europe in the future. One of our primary goals is that our services are reachable to subscribers across all operators. The idea is that the content is pushed/downloaded from our MMSC.

We do not intend to have mobile phone to mobile phone MMS communication.

Do operators allow unconditional access to download MMS content from any MMSC without having to modify the configuration on the mobile phone?
Is there a list available of operators which only allow communication with their own MMSC?

Any feedback in this respect is appreciated.

Thanks

Juergen,

Unfortunately, this can be a bit of a challenge at present.

If you have enough commercial clout (like a tie in to a popular TV show), then you might be able to work out an arrangement with some mobile operators to open up access to your MMSC. (I've seen this happen in the UK.)

Basically, in the UK, Vodafone and O2 are open to external MMSCs. Orange is not ... and T-Mobile I'm not 100% positive about.

In Germany, I believe that none of the major operators are open to external MMSCs. (Meaning you have to change phone settings to open up access.)

Some operators are starting to provide MM7 account subscriptions for content providers (you'll notice MM7 as one of the protocols supported by the Now SMS/MMS Gateway v5.0). But from what I've seen so far, most are only letting you send to that operator's subscribers through the subscribers, which complicates matters considerably.

All in all, there aren't many easy answers. We've got a swiss army knife full of connectivity options in the Now SMS/MMS Gateway (especially in the v5.0 release, beta details and download @ http://www.nowsms.com/beta5), but choosing the right approach for your market is constantly evolving in the current MMS market.
