Hi, I want to do a Bluetooth application and the application must broadcast an SMS whenever a Bluetooth is detected. I just want to ask if it is possible to send SMS via Bluetooth. thanks!

If the bluetooth device exposes a GSM modem interface, it is possible to do this with AT commands. You can't necessarily use these commands to make the phone think it received an SMS ... but you can issue commands over this interface to tell the phone to send an SMS.

Thanks for the reply bryce! But, I’m new to this environment, can you put this in plain words? I want to send data (broadcast) from a JSR 82 compliant device (a phone) to another bluetooth enabled device (a phone). The receiving device does not have my bluetooth client installed. I would like for the receiving device to receive the data (sms/.txt file) just as it would receive a contact, note or calendar item being sent to it via bluetooth.

Hi, I need to build an application to send SMS message from a PC to a moble for my graduation project. But all equipment must be wireless. I decide to use a Sony Ericsson T68i as a GSM modem. Can it connect to a PC by using the build in bluetooth function. If not, can you suggest any wireless GSM modem that can support NowSMS.

Louise, Is the application running on a phone? If so, then you would want to use whatever APIs are available on the phone to allow you to send an SMS from your application. Generally, you are talking about JSR-120 (or JSR-205) APIs. Does that make more sense to you? It really depends on where your application is running. My AT commands response was talking about an application running on a PC interfacing to a phone over bluetooth. -bn

Jennifer, The SonyEricsson T68i/T610/T630 family of devices are usually a good choice because they are flexible in how they can be connected to the PC for use as a modem. They have USB or serial cables available, but they also can be used as a modem over infrared or bluetooth. The only limitation of using a phone as a modem is that you can send and receive SMS, but you can only send MMS ... not receive MMS. -bn

I'd suggest you read the specifications ... ETSI GSM 03.40 covers this.

Hi everybody, The same as Jennifer, I would like to send SMS from a PC using USB-Bluetooth adapter to a phone that has bluetooth. Does anybody know how to do that in a simple way? I think that I need to develop an application to do that, Is that correct? or maybe exists one application that can do that. Thanks PD: Merry Christmas!

Ernesto, This is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway software product ... and that is what it does. It can interface with a GSM modem (over bluetooth, cable, etc.) to send and receive messages. You interface with NowSMS primarily via HTTP. If you want to develop your own application to do this, then that's where the ETSI GSM specifications come into play ... specifically ETSI GSM 07.05 (AT commands) and ETSI GSM 03.40 (PDU formats). Those specs are available from ETSI at http://www.etsi.org. -bn
