Hello to all,

I've got an MC35i GSM/GPRS modem and i now can
send SMS and MMS messages with the SMS/MMS Gateway. I wonder, if it costs money if I stay in standby mode without sending SMS and MMS for an long time? My SMS configuration is default and MMS is to set to GPRS.

Thanks Fabian

Hi Fabian,

What do you mean by standby mode?

Are you referring to the modem just sitting there on-line waiting for any activity?

If so, then this should not be a concern. It is the same as a mobile phone sitting around with no calls being sent or received.

The only concerns that you really have are someone calling the number of the modem and getting diverted to voice mail. Many operators will charge your minutes for the time that the caller is leaving you a voice mail. Unfortunately, many mobile operators will not allow you to turn off diverting calls to voice mail ... they will let you divert to another phone number, but not turn off diverting completely. For most people, this is not a major issue, but I'm just mentioning it for the sake of completeness.

Also, in some parts of the world, you can be charged for receiving an SMS message. Typically in the US, you are charged for receiving all SMS messages. (In other parts of the world, you are charged only if you receive a premium rate message, and of course, you would challenge this on your bill if that occurred. And people who send unsolicited premium rate SMS are dealt with rather severely.)

So, generally speaking, no, you are not being charged for being in standby mode. Just think of it like having a mobile phone sitting around but not making or receiving any calls.
