Hi,

I currently use an open source software to receive SMS from GSM Phone using AT-Commands, It works fine, but it has one flaws (I think). The flaws is, to get SMS(es) the software periodically check (Using "READ" AT-Commands) whether the GSM phone receive SMS(es) or not. This probably could result a shorten in the "life" of the GSM Phone because of the continuesly check for SMS eventhough there is no SMS and SMS(es) "traffic jam" if the periodic setting is relatively large. And now I wonder does Now SMS/MMS Gateway use this kind of schenario or the software somehow getting notification from GSM phone if there is SMS(es)?

Thank you.

Hi R.B.,

It can be a challenge to keep up with this if you are sending and receiving at the same time.

For most phone modems, there is no reliable alternative to polling.

I'm not sure what you mean by "life" ... unless you are referring to battery life on the phone ... in which case you definitely want to have the phone on a charger if you are using it as part of a service.

For dedicated modem devices, there are often better alternatives where polling is not required. NowSMS does not enable this mode by default (because some devices have a problem with it), but in the properties for a GSM modem in the "SMSC" list of NowSMS, you can set "SMS Access" to "Direct to Modem". This sends commands to tell the modem to notify the application when new messages are received without requiring polling.
