Hello,

I don't know exactly which GSM modems are supported by SMS/MMS gateway ?

Or what are the requirements for sending mms messages with a gsm-modem? Can every gsm modem send mms messages ? Or only GSM-modems with GRPS ?

I got the answer by falcom, that no falcom gsm-modem is able to send mms messages ..
Is that true ?

Or is it only possible because of the software "Now SMS / MMS Gateway" which does this job ?

Greetings,

Hi Raphael,

We do not have a list of supported GSM modems. What I can tell you is that the modem must support the AT command set for sending/receiving SMS messages, which is defined in the ETSI GSM 07.05 specification.

To send MMS messages, there are actually two ways of sending MMS messages via a GSM or GSM/GPRS modem. The following thread discusses these approaches: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/589.html

Refering back to that other thread, the direct MMS delivery approach only uses GSM features of the modem. It sends the MMS notification over SMS, and the recipient mobile fetches the MMS content over WAP. (Note that some operators block this type of message retrieval from external MMSCs.)

The scenario where the MMS message is sent via the operator MMSC over GPRS uses GPRS features of the modem. Here, we require that the modem supports the extended AT commands for GPRS which are defined in ETSI GSM 07.07. Specifically, we require that "ATD*99#" be supported for initiating a GPRS connection, and the device should support the "AT+CGDCONT" command.

I don't think either of the above would be a problem with a Falcom modem that supported both GSM and GPRS. I did a search through the discussion boards here to find references to Falcom modems. I saw a couple of threads where people were having problems that were easily addressed.

On this particular thread: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/484.html

There is a user that was trying to use the GPRS capabilities of the Falcom modem, and they were experiencing a problem. Based on that message, it looks like the GPRS support in the Falcom modem was fine ... the problem that they were experiencing was WAP related, and they needed an update to one of the DLLs in our beta release.
