Hello -

Sometimes we are having issues with wireless network on GSM modem. Is there any way we can send alerts from NowSMS when the LS (Line Status) light is continuously on?

Line Status (LS):

1) Continuous “on” state indicates that the wireless modem is not registered on the network.
2) Flashing state indicates registration on network.
3) Off state. Modem is off (not ready) or in download mode.

Thanks
Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Is the modem in an area where you have a low signal?

Enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG and restart the NowSMS service.

As part of the modem initialisation process, NowSMS sends the AT+CSQ command, which reports back the modem signal strength. You'll see something like this in the SMSDEBUG.LOG:

17:56:07:882 [3] ThreadProcessModem: AT+CSQ
17:56:07:960 [3] ThreadProcessModem:
+CSQ: 18,99

The first number after the +CSQ: is the one that reports the signal strength.

If you are seeing sub-20 values, see if you can relocate/reposition the PC with the modem in order to get a higher value.

Hi Des,

Here is what I am seeing in the log file. The connection seems to be fine when we start the service. It is dropping during the day. I am looking for a way to monitor.

Yesterday:
========================================
07:29:44:269 [17] ThreadProcessModem: AT+CSQ
07:29:44:377 [17] ThreadProcessModem:
+CSQ: 99,99
========================================

Today after relocating the Modem:
========================================
07:10:32:190 [17] ThreadProcessModem: AT+CSQ
07:10:32:300 [17] ThreadProcessModem:
+CSQ: 13,0
========================================

Is this better than yesterday? The second number changed from 99 to 0.

Thanks

Hi Vijay,

That is progress.

99 for the first number means no signal. Other than that value, higher numbers are better.

If you can find a location that gets that value up to 15, it will be more reliable.

The CSQ value reports the RSSI signal strength. Here's a table with our observations:

99No SignalUnusable

2-109Poor

Thank You, Des!

I will move the modem to a location where it will get good signal. My actual question is can we monitor this value using NowSMS software and send an alert when it goes to 99?

Thanks
Vijay
