Currently messages are sitting in the queue retrying with the following error message.

LastErrorInfo=ERROR - Modem Response (2): +CMS ERROR: 515 -- Standard 19200 bps Modem

Please advise on the best way to get rid of this error.

Hi Clint,

Is this a USB modem?

CMS ERROR 515 is not a standard error...but with some modems, it is an error that the device is busy. Busy doing what would be the question.

My guess would be that the modem firmware has crashed.

Have you tried reseting the modem by unplugging it from the computer, and then plugging it back in? (If it has external power, remove that as well.)

Des:

This is a USB modem. Only thing I have tried was unplugging the USB cable from the back of the computer and then plugging it back in. I can verify if it has external power but I do not believe I seen external power.

If the firmware has crashed; what is our next steps in getting it back online?

Thanks,
Clint Edmund

Hi Clint,

What is the model of the modem?

If it is a stick with no external power, unplugging from the computer and plugging it back in should resolve the problem. This will reset the firmware (software on the modem itself).

If it doesn't, then it is more likely that there is a hardware failure...or maybe a network registration problem...or possibly the account is out of credit for sending any more SMS.

Here's what I'd suggest:

1.) Access the mobile operator web site to check the account balance and make sure there is credit.

2.) Remove the SIM card from the modem, then reinsert it. Maybe it was loose and not making good contact.

3.) Stop the NowSMS service and try to use the software that came with the modem to see if it is reporting any errors.

4.) Put the SIM card from the modem into a phone to see if the phone can use the SIM to send/receive messages.

5.) If you have another SIM that you could try in the modem, that would be a good idea.

It sounds like hardware failure or network/account issues.

One more thing ... enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG (checkbox on "Serial #" page) ... restart the service and try sending a few messages. Send the SMSDEBUG.LOG to nowsms@nowsms.com with Attention: Des in the subject line. I'll look that over to see if it provides any other clues.

Please see the attached log. I am going to try some of the things you suggested above.

Please stand by for my post.

If we just want to replace the device? How do we proceed?

Hi Clint,

I've been looking through the log, and it looks like the modem is not connecting to any mobile operator. It appears that the modem does not see any mobile operators.

What network should it be on?

The SIMCOM_SIM300 chipset in the modem is GSM/GPRS ... also known as 2G or 2.5G technology. I'm wondering if maybe your mobile operator has refarmed 2G wireless spectrum in your area and discontinued support.

AT&T did recently shutdown their 2G network in the US ... info at https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1069631

The clues I'm seeing suggest this device was associated with AT&T...so it's starting to look like this is the problem.

Is it possible to procure a device that is on 4G? Is the device we have a 2G device? We have GTM-201-USB device.

Clint,

The problem with many 4G/LTE modems is that they do not support the AT command interface for SMS. They are designed to provide mobile internet access.

For replacing the device....in most situations, using an Android phone as a modem is preferable to using a dedicated GSM modem device. These reasons include:

LTE Support – LTE based Android devices can provide higher speed support for MMS sending and receiving.

Network Compatibility – Some mobile operators (and modem device manufacturers) assume that modems are used for internet access only and disable SMS and/or MMS support for modems. This is not an issue for Android phones.

CDMA Support – For years, US based customers have asked us about modems that can support Verizon and Sprint. Android phone support allows us to support those network operators using both CDMA and high speed LTE.

Broad Device Availability – For customers interested in trying NowSMS, it is far easier to locate or acquire an Android device than a conventional modem.

MMS Performance – With conventional GSM modems, MMS performance is limited by the mode switching required to switch between data and SMS channels. There are no mode switching delays mixing SMS and MMS traffic on Android devices.

Multiple Modems – USB connectivity (and driver quality or lack thereof) is a major limitation for systems with multiple conventional GSM modems. For Android phones, the NowSMS server connects to the Android phones over WiFi, providing far greater performance for NowSMS to simultaneously control multiple modems. Modems can even be located in different physical locations to maximize signal strength. (The NowSMS server communicates over WiFi to an app running on the Android phone.)

The NowSMS server doesn't have to be on WiFi (it can be hardwired). The Android device needs to be on WiFI, and they need to be able to talk to each other via TCP/IP.

Would this device still connect to the server and still utilize the nowSMS software?

Yes, it gets added into NowSMS as a modem. So, it basically works the same. (A few specialized developer features, such as WAP push, are not available with this type of modem, but those features were not supported with conventional modems by US mobile operators anyway, so I am confident you won't miss them.)

There's a quick start guide that explains how it is configured here: https://www.nowsms.com/doc/quick-start-guide
