We are trying to receive MMS messages but nothing seems to work. We believe we have the phones we have been testing with as modems correctly connected (SMS echo seems to work most of the time) but we get no indication at all that an MMS has been received or handled. Is there anything we may be doing wrong?

We have used a Nokia 6210, 6310i, 7650 and an ericsson T68i. Is there some special magic? I believe that all the SIMs we are using are configured for MMS correctly.

Is there a logfile that would help? Can we turn on a higher logging level?

regards,

Keith

Keith,

Assuming that the receiving of SMS messages is working correctly, the receiving of MMS messages is a little challenging.

This is because if you are using a phone that supports MMS (or even WAP Push), the phone grabs the message, and will not send it over the serial port like it will with SMS.

(We've got notes about this in our documentation.)

All of the phones that you mention do support at least WAP push.

If you can find a Nokia 7110 that has a pre-WAP push browser, that would work. We've seen a lot of 7110's recycled as GSM modems these days.

Assuming that the phone isn't grabbing the MMS ... you can enable the debug log by manually editing SMSGW.INI, and adding Debug=Yes under the [SMSGW] section header. Restart the gateway, and it will log information to SMSDEBUG.LOG.

As an alternative approach, you might want to consider receiving MMS through an e-mail gateway interface, where you have the MMS users send messages to an e-mail address rather than a phone.

Thanks for your prompt response. We can't seem to find an old enough phone. Do all Nokia GSM modem PC cards do the right thing? We are not sure we will be able to source any other type in the short term.

Unfortunately we can't use an email gateway (for complicated reasons) or things would be a lot simpler.

cheers,

Keith,

A Nokia GSM modem PC card should be fine.

I haven't specifically tested this feature on one of those modems, but I have used them in the past. I see no reason why one of those would even try to intercept a WAP push message. (That is the problem here, the MMS message is encapsulated in a WAP push, and the phone grabs the WAP push before presenting it to the serial interface.)
