We currently have two APN’s that will effect MMS and WAP browsing. The MMSWAP APN} gives you access to MMS and our WAP download portal. Our MMS public WAP APN gives you access to MMS, our WAP download portal AND the PUBLIC wap internet.

Unfortunately, in our testing we seem to find conflict with using both APN’s. IF both are programmed into the handset but only one is provisioned in the HLR it is possible and probable that you will get a “connection failed: connect using secondary account?” message. This would be a confusing way for customers to manipulate our system.

If a “default” APN would always be accessible to our customers what would the impact be? If the APN in the phone mismatched the default APN would it still proceed to connect to the default? If so, we may consider making the MMSWAP APN the default. Worse case scenario than at least customers could access the WAP download portal. Customers can only use MMS if they are provisioned in the MMSC so there is no risk on that side.

Hi Mike,

The main reason that providers establish two different APNs is because they want the MMS billing model to match the billing model that is used for SMS and voice traffic in most parts of the world (except the USA).

Basically, they want the sender to pay, and there to be no charge for receiving an MMS message.

In order to facilitate receiving of an MMS to be free, they setup a separate MMS-only APN ... where this APN is free, but only provides access to the MMSC.

If you are not contending with that issue, then perhaps you could get by with only a single APN.

However, it sounds like you might have separate billing for the APN that also provides public internet access. So you may not be able to get by with a single APN.

My understanding of the "default APN" is that this is what is used if you try to make a GPRS connection and the APN is left blank on the phone.

I've seen a few providers in Scandanavia where their published WAP settings leave the APN blank, because they are just using the default.

So I'm not sure that setting a default APN will help you any with your specific issue.
