Hi,
Our company is developing a SMS application for the China Mainland market. We are not able to get a direct connection to the telco now (for various reasons), and thus we need to choose a phone or modem.
We expect to send 1000 messages a day, and receive about 200, during the first 3 months, and then perhaps increase to 3000/600 afterwards.
Delivery time is not important, if it takes a message a few hours to go out, thats ok.
We want to receive replies on the same number.
What should we buy? A modem (like a FastTrack)or a phone (like a Nokia 7650)?
We need to be able to send/receive english and chinese characters.
What kind of delivery/receive rates can we expect?
Comments please?
Thank you.

I'll make an attempt to answer my own question after spending more time here on the site and RTFM.

About message speeds
http://www.nowsms.com/support/bulletins/tb-nowsms-006.htm

About GSM modems
http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/configuring_smsc_connec tions/GSM_Modems.htm
Note: It mentions the Nokia Card Phone, but I hear it only supports outbound SMS, so maybe it is not a good choice?

Hi Zhang,

Good research. We're in the process of updating the web page that you reference, and when it is next updated, the Nokia Card phone reference will be removed. (The old Nokia Card phone was ok ... it was, of course GSM only. The Nokia D211 seems to take the place of that product, and it has GSM and GPRS support, but it has the problem with receive message support.)

Overall I've noticed that people seem to be happy with the Siemens MC35. The Wavecom Fastracks are good, I'm hesitant to recommend them for MMS at the moment, but their SMS handling is very good.

I would spend the money on a dedicated modem over a phone, although you could certainly get started with a phone.

English and Chinese support isn't a problem, it's not really a function of the modem, it's a function of the software. Our software expects you to use UTF-8 encoding for sending/receiving messages with the gateway.

Thanks for your reply. I purchased a phone today, that so far, seems to work great. It is the Siemans 3618, and it came with a cable. It was only 980RMB, or about $120USD. Only bad thing is the battery charger and serial cable can not be connected at the same time. The unit came with two bateries, so I brought an 3rd party charger for 60RMB (about 8USD), and I'll just swap them as needed. Just an idea, there is a AT+ command to monitor the battery function in the phone - maybe it could be added as a feature in NowSMS to send a SMS to a tech if the battery is running low, to remind them to change.

Hi all,
When I configured NowSMS as 2-way SMS gateway, there is any limitation related to the SMS receiving performance ( the license docs talked only about the delivery capacity)?
Thanx

Messages will be pulled from the modem as quickly as possible (to prevent message loss). However, the processing of the messages by routing them to a "2-way" command will be limited in speed based upon the license.
