Hi,

Is there any recommended phones to use?
Before buying one I wanted to check out, I have not found anything mentioned in the doc. I could choose between:
Nokia 7650, Sharp GX10, Panasonic GD87, Mitsubitsi m320 and Ericsson T68i.

Also, I envision to connect the phone to a pc and receive sms and send and receive mms with it. Is there anything special I shoul be aware of?

thanks,

If you're planning to connect the phone to the PC for sending/receiving messages, and that is all that it will be doing, then the cheapest phone is usually the best.

We use an Ericsson T68i in the office. We've also used a Nokia 6210 and a 7110 in the past, as well as the Ericsson T68m and an old R380. Aside from the dedicated Wavecom modems, as a device connected directly to the gateway, we haven't done any testing with phones other than Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

The only thing I'd point out is that any phone that supports MMS generally won't let received MMS be processed by the gateway. The browser grabs the MMS and never routes it to the gateway, but regular SMS messages get routed just fine. An older phone (or a dedicated GSM modem like a Wavecom device) that doesn't support MMS or WAP push generally works best if you need to be able to receive MMS messages over the phone interface.

Hope that helps!

any tips on phones that can have a data cable AND a charger plugged into them? batteries don't last forever!

It's definitely the case with the data cables for the T68i/T68m ... (and I'm pretty sure for the Nokias as well, I just have a T68i connected to the computer that I'm typing this from).

The data cable for the T68 plugs into the entire bottom of the phone, but it includes a connector to plug the charger into the data cable. The phone sits there for days, I never touch it.

The nokia 7110 could have both the charger and the datacable connected at the same time.

Anyone know any other nokias that could do the same? i'm planning in getting a new phone.

ericsson s520 is a great phone and you can get it very cheap since it's discontinued. The only negative is it's big size but that doesn't matter.

Brice: dsoes this phone has a reported problem routing MMS?

Thanks.

I have an Ericsson R520m, and it does work well for sending messages, and for receiving text SMS. But it can't receive MMS messages because while the phone doesn't support MMS, it does support WAP push, and the MMS messages get routed to the WAP push browser and never passed to the modem interface.

I've used a Nokia 7110 (pre-WAP push firmware). Other than that it's pretty hard to find a phone that supports the AT command set, but that doesn't support WAP push.

If you absolutely need to receive MMS messages through the modem interface, PC Card modems (like the Sierra Wireless Aircard 710/750) or a dedicated external GSM modem device (like the Wavecom Fastrack or Siemens MC35) are the way to go.
