I am having problems with recieveing SMS's with nowSMS. I am using a Nokia 7650 over IR connection, this connection is ok as I can Send messages with no trouble, but if I try to recieve one only the Phone gets the message and its not passed to nowSMS.

I have tried doing as suggested and removing everything from SMS command table and checking Process Recieved SMS Messages but I don't get anything in the 'SMS-IN' folder, In fact I don't appear to have an 'SMS-in' folder.

Thanks for your time....

Hi Martyn,

The SMS-IN folder won't be created until the first time that a new SMS message is received.

On the "SMSC" page of the configuration, highlight the modem entry, and press "Properties". Is "Receive SMS Messages" checked there as well?

It is normal for the message to be received by the phone as well, but as long as you don't click to read the message before NowSMS picks it up off the phone, it should still get received.

Martyn,

Ok ... I should have mentioned that this particular setting was added in the v5.0 release (something extra that needs to be looked at if running that version).

Let's try this ...

Send an SMS message to the device. Do not take any action to read the message on the device.

Stop NowSMS.

Connect to the device using HyperTerminal (you need to connect via a COM port number instead of a modem driver name).

Make sure that you have a valid connection to the modem by typing ATZ and pressing Enter, which should result in an OK response being returned.

Try typing AT+CMGL=0 ... do you get any response other than OK?

Type AT+CPMS="ME" (should get OK back), and then try AT+CMGL=0 again. Any difference?

Type AT+CPMS="SM" (again OK returned), and then try AT+CMGL=0 again. Any difference?

AT+CMGL=0

OK
AT+CPMS="SM"

Ok, when you asked me to try AT+CGML=1, did you mean AT+CMGL=1? (I have done a bit of looking on the web and found a list of SMS AT modem commands)
From what I understand, which is VERY little AT+CMGL is the List Messages command. If this is what you ment then... When I try AT+CMGL=1 I get:-

+CMGL: (0-4)

OK

The command AT+CMGL? just gives an error.

I hope this all makes sence. And am very glad at all this help you are giving to such a novice, I do want to learn ;-).

Hi Martyn,

I apologise for that typo (and the delay getting back to you).

AT+CMGL=0 generally presents unread messages, while AT+CMGL=1 presents all messages (read or unread).

I was wondering if the SMS messages might be getting automatically marked as read for some reason.

If you send another SMS message into your phone, does the list of messages returned by AT+CMGL=1 increase?

Hi,
It looks like AT+CMGL command is only looking at the SIM card for messages, as the nokia 7650 uses its own memory for SMS. If i move the sim card to another phone (that stores SMS on the SIM) and send a message, then swap the sim back to the 7650 and try the AT+CMGL=1 command I do get diffrent results depending on how many messages there are on the sim.

Hmm ...

Because we issued the AT+CPMS="SM" command, the command would indeed only look at the SIM card.

What does the AT+CPMS=? command return?

Actually, try AT+CPMS? as well ... one of these commands lists all of the message storage locations available. The other reports which storage location is currently active.

Martyn,

I just did some research. I connected via Bluetooth to a Nokia 3650, and then to a 6600. (Both run the Symbian OS like the 7650.)

I experienced the same results that you did. SMS messages were received on the phone, but I couldn't access them through any of these commands.

So I did some searching through the Nokia discussion boards, and apparently this is a limitation of their Symbian based phones. The AT commands for sending messages work, but the AT commands for receiving messages do not. There is no way to receive SMS messages on these phones.

Apparently, this affects the Nokia 3650, 6600, 7650, and 9210.

I'm sorry that I wasn't aware of this to begin with.

If you are writing software for the modem, look at the +CNMI command options.

But beware, most phones don't support the modes where messages are routed directly to the TE ... that typically requires a specialised GSM modem device.

As this is the support area for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway, I'd encourage you to take a look at our product. With our product, we'll call an HTTP script that you configure (or an executable program) each time an SMS message is received.
