Hi,

I have a Gemalto EHS6 modem.

Firstly: Can I use this modem to send MMS messages?

Second: How can I configure MMS APN username and password?

When trying to send MMS, I get the following message: "Error: MMSC Service Not Active". What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
Axel

Hi Axel,

The "Error: MMSC Service Not Active" error occurs when the MM1/MM7 port is not active in the MMSC settings.

This was not an intentional restriction/requirement.

We have posted an update that fixes this problem. In the web interface, go to Admin/System Configuration, and near the top of the page, there should be an option available to download this update.

We don't have any experience with that particular modem, but I think there's a good chance it will work.

Were you able to successfully define the MMS APN and MMS Server URL (and MMS Proxy if required)? Or did you get an error about being unable to connect to the server? We did discover a problem where a connection error was occurring in many Linux environments, and this update also fixes that problem.

Which mobile operator and what settings are you using?

Regarding your question about being able to configure an.MMS username and password ... there are hidden settings, but we have not been able to test them ... as most operators do not require these settings. To manually define them, scroll down to Advanced Settings, where there is an option to edit SMSGW.INI. Under the modem section header (e.g., [Modem - /dev/ttyUSB0]), manually add:

APNLogin=username
APNPass=password

Hi,

Thanks for the update.

I'm trying to connect to test the connection to my MMS APN, and I see the following in SMSDEBUG.lOG:

But the test never completes... it seems like it is stuck...

Any suggestions?

Hi Axel,

I think we're going to need to add more debug.

Does this APN require a username/password, and did you manually configure these settings?

Is there another APN that you could try that does not require a username/password? Even if it won't work for MMS, I am wondering if the PPP connection would successfully complete so that we could confirm the problem is related to username/password authentication.

At the point that your debug info stops, NowSMS is trying to negotiate a PPP connection. Here is a typical sequence:

I don't have an APN which doesn't require username/password.

I set the APNLogin and APNPass variables as you described... No luck...

Hi Axel,

What Linux platform and version?

I've verified that the authentication headers are being sent if the APNLogin & APNPass SMSGW.INI settings are present. So that should be working.

However, we have observed that our error handling and connection timeouts are being handled inconsistently across platforms.

I recreated a problem similar to what you describe where the connection hangs most consistently on a Raspberry Pi ... when I disconnected the external antenna from the modem, any connection attempts would hang indefinitely.

We fixed this particular issue in a newly posted update, and are continuing to investigate more platforms.

In this case, the underlying connectivity problem was low signal strength. To see your signal strength, search for AT+CSQ in the debug log. In my case, I'd see 15,99 with the antenna. Without the antenna, the 15 would change to 2 or 1 or 0, which is definitely too low.

If you continue to experience problems, I'd like to see a more complete SMSDEBUG.LOG. There is a new setting for SMSGW.INI, under the [SMSGW] header, add DebugPPP=Yes to log details about the data connection.

If you prefer to email the log, send to nowsms@nowsms.com. Please include Attention: Bryce in the subject line.

Thanks for following up.

We will look at adding the APN username & password settings to the configuration interface, so in the future it will hopefully not require manually editing the SMSGW.INI configuration file.
