I'm confused.

Your web site says that your WAP gateway supports WAP 2.0.

But I cannot figure out how to connect to the gateway using a Nokia 6600, while I have no problem with various other phones.

Nokia tells me that this is because I need a gateway that supports WAP 2.0.

What is the story?

Hi Confused,

This is understandably a bit confusing.

WAP 2.0 is not the entire story here, only a piece of it.

If you look at WAP 2.0, there are essentially two layers of it. (Don't worry, I'm not going to start on the OSI model, I'm going to try to keep this simple.)

The top layer is the presentation layer. This is the markup language that is used for presentation in the browser.

In order to be WAP 2.0 compliant, a browser needs to support XHTML Basic (and there is a variant known as XHTML Mobile Profile). A WAP 2.0 device will also usually support WML for compatibility with existing WAP services, although this is not required by the specifications. (This backward compatibility is however, a market requirement, outside of Japan.)

The next layer is the transport layer. This is how the browser communicates. And this is where it gets a little confusing.

A WAP 2.0 compliant device can support either the existing WAP protocols (WSP/WTP/WDP), or it can directly implement HTTP over TCP/IP. When it implements HTTP over TCP/IP, it is supposed to use Wireless Profiled HTTP (W-HTTP) and Wireless Profiled TCP (W-TCP), which are basically some interoperable with regular HTTP and TCP/IP, they just involve some configuration options for optimisation in wireless environments.

While there are a number of WAP 2.0 devices on the market that implement WAP 2.0 over the existing WAP protocols, the Nokia 6600 implements WAP 2.0 over W-HTTP/W-TCP.

The Nokia 6600 can do this directly, or it can do this through an HTTP proxy.

If you configure the Nokia 6600 to connect to a GPRS APN with full internet access, the browser will work just fine.

Or you can configure the Nokia 6600 to connect to an HTTP proxy server. In this case, the Nokia 6600 uses an HTTP based proxy instead of the existing WAP proxy capabilities of a conventional WAP gateway.

Why would you want to use a proxy? Well, it can generally offer better performance by reducing some of the extra activity related to DNS queries, and it can generally optimise the wireless connection by supporting compression and keep-alive sockets.

What we've found is that there is also an issue on many networks that the WAP gateway is integrated with RADIUS to identify the MSISDN of connected users. This is particularly important for MMS, where the WAP gateway often supplies the MSISDN in an HTTP header, so that the MMSC can identify the user that is making a request.

We do have a new version of our WAP gateway, which is now known as the Now.WAP Proxy, which supports both conventional WAP clients, as well as HTTP clients such as the Nokia 6600. (It can also support compression for PCs browsing the web over GPRS.)

The new Now.WAP Proxy is designed to be an easy upgrade to WAP3GX, so it can be installed over an existing installation. You just need to add an additional parameter to configure the port number for the HTTP proxy. (Note that if you want to be able to send OTA messages to configure the settings on the Nokia 6600, use a port of 80 or 8080 for the HTTP proxy, as the 6600 has a bug where it will not properly accept OTA messages for another port.)

We're still in the process of updating the web site, but you can find the Now.WAP Proxy at http://www.nowwap.com.

What you mean with OTA?
OTAP?
OTA-WSP?
OTA-HTTP?

Hi Arnout,

When Kent is talking about OTA in the above message, he is referring to the sending out of configuration messages OTA, using either Open Mobile Alliance Provisioning Content v1.1, or the Nokia/SonyEricsson OTA Specification v7.1.

Hi Kent,

As you wrote the 6600 has a bug to accept OTAP.
Usually the OTAP binary is sent via SMSC to port 2948 on the phone. Does your statement means that it is not possible for 6600?

Thanks in advance!

I just purchased the Nokia 6820 from ATT Wireless for their GSM service. The phone will not access mmode. I have spent several hours in two stores with ATT people reloading all of the settings, WAP 2.0 gateway IP,ports, proxies, etc. This has been done manually and OTA. I have also spent more than 2 hours on the phone with different technicians from ATT and from Nokia. No one has come up a solution yet. One ATT person took his SIM card out of his phone, put it into mine, and the phone accessed mmode. My SIM card in his phone worked as well, but when he put my SIM back in my phone, the messaage "NO server access" appears. He tried another Nokia 6820 right out of the box and it wouldn't access mmode either.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

My 6320 was also doing the "No Server Access" dance. I called in and talked to a clueful support guy, and he asked for my IMEI number, put me on hold, and came back on the line and said "try now" and it worked.

I mentioned that other folks were having the same problem, and asked what they should ask to have done should they call in. He said to ask that they "reset the WSB profile"

So, try that. Good Luck!

When you are sending out browser provisioning settings over the air, and specify that access is via a proxy, the Nokia 6600 does not properly parse the port number associated with the proxy. If you specify port 80 or 8080 as the proxy port, it will work fine. Any other value, and the 6600 will interpret it as port 0, which will not work.

As part of my MS project i would like to implement WAP proxy 2.0. Read about wireless HTTP and wireless TCP. Is it required to implement the entire TCP layer or can we make optimisation in the existing TCP in our machine?

Gateway is required in WAP 2.0? because WAP 2.0 is having proxy.

Hi All

Aa per i know we have to send OTA settings to Port 49999 ( According to NOKIA OTA specs) or Port 2948 ( According to OMA Prov specs).

Issues with Nokia 6600
1. Is Nokia 6600 is following "Open Mobile Alliance Provisioning Content v1.1" specifications ?
This doubt i am getting because Mr.kennt williams is refering to port 2948.

If i am wrong, please correct me

Issues with Nokia 6820
1. If i am trying to send OTA settings according to the NOkia 7.0 specs "it is not recognising the recieved settings"?
2. Is Nokia 6820 is following the Open Mobile Alliance Provisioning Content v1.1" specifications ?

Thanks in Advance

Even in setting the MMSURL also Nokia6600 is having a bug. I am trying to configure the 6600 by pushing the OTAP. It is not taking the ADDR from the APPLICATION characterstic.

Is it a known issue?
or We have to use to some other parameters for this?

Hi all,
Again with WAP2.0 nokia 6220. The Now.wap seems to give its ip address instead of the X-MSISDN for WAP 2.0 handsets, why???

Hi all,
I've read that with WAP 2.0 there isn't a "security hole", but only with the HTTP over TCP/IP stack?

Thanks in advance.

Hello
And what can I do when I need a DNS to configure the APN via OTA sms?, i just sent a configuration sms and configure the whole APN of 6600 mobile, but the address to connect is the IP address, not the name address. This IP address is valid but not for all the mobile companys. I need to configure the DNS via OTA sms but I see in the doc that it is no posible
Thanks

Hi,
I'm wondering if someone can tell me the default ports this wapnow proxy uses.
I had a samsung a530 and it used to have wap3gx and it worked fine.
I upgraded to the LG 8100 and this would't work.
I upgraded to nowproxy and enabled http wap2 on port 8080 and now the LG works but the samsung doesn't.

Is there a way to figure out how to make both phones work? Is the samsung a wap1?

Cheers
