The AudioVox 8500 is a CDMA phone. Before you can connect to a WAP gateway you need to configure the phone to make an IP connection. This might require the activation of a particular service option on your account with your service provider. And at a minimum, it would require that you configure settings for making an IP connection on your phone ... either using CDMA circuit-switched (dial up IP) or CDMA packet data. I see that the AudioVox 8500 supports CDMA packet data, but I suspect you would have to have account settings provisioned for you with the operator. Assuming IP connectivity is in place, you typically would configure the IP address of the WAP gateway into the phone. But keep in mind that your IP connection might not provide full connectivity to the open internet. There is a debug mode that you can enable in WAP3GX to see if it is receiving any packets at all (manually edit WAPGW.INI, and add Debug=Yes under the [WAPGW] header, then restart the gateway). You can look at WAPDEBUG.LOG to see if the gateway is receiving any requests at all. My suspicion is that nothing is making it as far as the gateway at this point ... that there is no IP connectivity between the phone and the WAP gateway ... which is a network issue. I would suggest that at a starting point you should talk to your operator about how to enable WAP services for your phone. - Kent Williams Now Wireless Support

Do they offer the capability to allow you to use the phone as a data modem? If so, there might be a chance of being able to make it work. You'd probably have to supply your own internet dial-in account that you would connect to from the phone. Basically, when a phone makes a CSD (circuit switched data) connection, it is making a PPP connection (dial-up TCP/IP), which is the same protocol that you use with a standard internet dial-up account. But the provider does have to have some support in their network to enable this type of activity. That's why you might want to see first if they support the ability to use your phone as a data modem for your PC. -bn

I'm sorry, but I have no information on configuring the Audiovox 8500. A quick search of the web tells me that there should be a button on the phone that is used to load the browser. Press that button, release it, and then quickly press it again but hold it down this time. That should cause a "Browser Menu" to be displayed, which will allow you to change settings. -- Kent Williams Now Wireless Support
