Hi Jamil,

A WAP gateway is very similar in concept to an HTTP proxy server. The primary difference is that with an HTTP proxy, a web browser talks HTTP to the proxy, and the proxy talks HTTP to the content server. However, with a WAP gateway, the mobile phone uses WSP (WAP Session Protocol) to talk to the WAP gateway, and the WAP gateway uses HTTP to talk to the content server.

So a pre-requisite to being able to use the WAP gateway is that you must have the ability to make an IP connection from your mobile phone to the WAP gateway. This is done either with GPRS or Circuit Switched Dialup (CSD).

Since you're asking about a dialing number, it sounds like you plan to use CSD. Basically, when you make a CSD connection, you are dialing into a standard type of internet dial-up account (PPP ... which is dial-up TCP/IP). The WAP gateway does not provide the network access server that accepts dial-up, you need to either use an existing internet dial-up service, or you need to setup a network access server to accept dial-up (on Windows machines, there is a dial-up service that can be installed called Remote Access Services. We do advise, however, if you attempt to install your own access server that you first attempt to connect to the server using a PC and dial-up networking, and verify that it can connect through the access server before you attempt the same with a mobile phone. The reason we recommend this is that it is much easier to troubleshoot IP connectivity issues from a PC than from a mobile phone.)

Of course, another pre-requisite is some content. Content resides on a standard web server, usually with a MIME type of "text/vnd.wap.wml".

Hi,

You are correct. If we have the MSISDN, we don't bother forwarding the IP address.

We could easily make a modification to faciliate this. So if you need to always see the IP address, we could add a configuration option. E-mail me at wap@now.co.uk if you want to follow-up on this.
