I am trying to use now.wap for internet access on my verizon phone. I thought I could run it on my home computer and connect through it instead of paying verizon $5 a month. I only got the 30-day trial, but it seems like a very useful tool and as I played with it I became more interested in using it.

The problem is that I can't get my phone ( Kyocera KX2 ) to connect properly. When I try to use port 9201 I get nothing from now.wap, but when I enable HTTP proxy and change the port on my phone to the port I specify on now.wap the connection shows up on now.wap's service information. I read in another post where now.wap was not intended for the purpose I am using it for, but I was wondering if anyone knew where I was going wrong. Here is the debug informaiton:

The phone is configured to go to "http://homepage" as its home page when the browser starts up.

The gateway cannot resolve that as a valid host name, so the request fails.

Can you change the configuration in the phone to use a different home page?

I have tried to figure out how. I actually thought about what you said, but I didn't know if I could set a homepage on the server. There is a option to set a default homepage and I set it to a valid wap address. I emailed the phone manufacturer ( Kyocera KX2 ) but haven't heard anything back about how to change the homepage on the phone. I ordered the data cable and read a post about changing a file on the phone by editing the hex values. So when the cable comes in on tuesday afternoon hopefully that will work.

We do support remapping the home page for older devices (where the home page could not be remapped).

But we don't support that in the WAP2/HTTP interface.

You could create a host file entry (WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS) to redirect "homepage" to an IP address. But you can only use that file to map it to an IP address, not a complete URL.

If you did that, the initial homepage request would get sent to the web server specified in the HOSTS file. But it would have a "Host:" header of "homepage". So if you were running a multi-homed web server, you would need to configure the server to redirect "homepage" to an appropriate URL. This would be pretty difficult to do if you weren't hosting your own web server.

I'm actually quite surprised that a phone would be locked down such that you can override the WAP gateway address, but not the home page.

That was indeed the problem.

I got the data cable in today and found some software that let me change the homepage on the phone. It really suprised me that I couldn't do it on the phone itself. I can't even get it to let me type in an address.

I guess Verizon just wants people to access their homepage and make it harder to get free wap access.

But now it works just fine. I do get the error "gateway timed out" on the weather channel's wap page. Is there a way to set the timeout higher? Or is this just since i am running the gateway on a cable modem, even though I only have 1 connection (me) at a time.
