Hi, We've been running two Android phones with two dedicated servers running NowSMS Lite for several years. We would like to upgrade to a single server with some type of failover capability. Questions: 1. To run multiple android phones would we just upgrade to the Modem Edition or Gateway edition? 2. We would like to run a bank of four phones - is any of the software able to detect if one of the phones is offline or not sending and then NOT route messages there? ie. failover. 3. We've been using Google Pixel 1 phones, but they are starting to have issues. Which Android phone that is currently available do you recommend for using with NowSMS? We send about 100K messages per month per phone. Thanks. Mike | |||

Hi Mike, 1. It depends, basically it’s a license issue. The gateway edition has a fixed overall messages per minute limit that applies against all outbound message sending. The modem edition does not apply those limits, but limits the number of modems that can be connected. 2. By default, a message will be routed to the first available route. Alternatively, you can force a message to a particular route, by including the SMSCRoute parameter when submitting a message, or by specifying a sender address that matches the phone number of one of the modems. Prefix routing is another control that can be used to route messages to a specific route. If you are explicitly routing messages to a particular modem, and you want to have failover, there are settings that can be applied to SMSGW.INI. Here is a post that explains these settings: https://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/73920.html The settings are a bit imperfect, however, especially when applied to modems, because there are essentially 2 ways that a modem could be failing…it might have crashed and become unresponsive requiring manual intervention to reset, or it might be out of credit or lost signal and reject messages. Two different settings handle the 2 conditions… BackupForRouteLive redirects if off-line and ReRouteOnError redirects when the second condition occurs. A very recent thread points out that using both settings can result in a routing loop, which has just been fixed. (See https://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/113910.html for details.) 3. Nokia phones seem to be some of the most stable and seem to be close to the stock Android experience. Recently, we’ve tried a few Blu phones…they do have some adware that is a little annoying, but doesn’t seem to get in the way of anything. Regards, Des NowSMS Support |
