I see the new download link for NowSMS Lite.

What is the difference between NowSMS Lite and the other NowSMS? (NowSMS Heavy?)

Hi,

I knew somebody was going to ask this question before we had a write-up that explains it.

NowSMS Lite supports a single GSM modem only for outbound SMS and MMS message sending.

By contrast, NowSMS supports SMSC connections using SMPP, UCP/EMI, CIMD2 and HTTP, in addition to GSM modems. NowSMS also supports multiple concurrent SMSC connections.

When we talk about MMS, NowSMS Lite can only send MMS messages out via an operator MMSC using a single GSM modem.

By contrast, NowSMS can be used as a direct delivery MMSC. NowSMS supports MM7, MM4, MM1, SMTP and EAIF connectivity for interfacing with external MMSCs, in addition to GSM modems. NowSMS also supports multiple MMSC connections.

NowSMS Lite is easier to setup and configure, because there aren't as many configuration options. There's only a single GSM modem connection, so there's no complex routing to configure.

NowSMS Lite doesn't include the Multimedia WAP Push and Multimedia Content Push features of the full version of NowSMS.

NowSMS Lite doesn't include the OTA functions of the full version of NowSMS. It also doesn't support any e-mail interfaces.

NowSMS Lite does support 2-way SMS, 2-way MMS ... all the same Java, PHP and command-line script examples that we've provided over the years.

NowSMS Lite also support SMPP clients. What this means is that NowSMS Lite has a built-in SMPP server, so any applications that use the SMPP protocol to send and receive messages can connect to NowSMS Lite where NowSMS Lite will route messages to/from the GSM modem on behalf of the SMPP client.

In a similar fashion, NowSMS Lite also supports MM7 clients. This means that applications that use the MM7 protocol to send and receive MM7 can connect to the NowSMS server, and NowSMS will MMS route messages to/from the GSM modem, performing the necessary message format translations.

All in all, NowSMS Lite has quite a bit of functionality. But it's oriented toward sending/receiving all messages via a single GSM modem.

NowSMS Lite is too limited for the majority of NowSMS customers. But for a lot of "newbies" and less demanding users, it's an ideal solution. The configuration process is so much easier...

NowSMS is an incredibly flexible tool. If you read some of the questions in posts out here, it can be somewhat mind blowing, because customers are using it in such different ways.

But with that flexibility comes complexity. The idea behind NowSMS Lite is to provide a simpler solution for customers with less demanding needs.

If those needs grow to require multiple modems, other types of SMSC connections, it's an easy upgrade from NowSMS Lite to the full version of NowSMS.

I'm not sure if that answers your question or not ...

We do have a newsletter going out in the coming days with more information. Here's some text from it that might provide some more explanation:

quote:

The Now SMS/MMS Gateway is one of the most widely used middleware software solutions for SMS, MMS and WAP Push messaging needs. When asked to explain it, we often refer to it as a Swiss Army Knife of mobile messaging protocols.

Since it's introduction in 2002, we've consistently updated NowSMS to support the widest variety of SMS and MMS protocols, following both the latest industry standards, and the real world variations that make you realise how incomplete the standards are.

We're proud to talk about how well the NowSMS product scales from entry level test-lab configurations to production mobile operator environments.

However, with all of the flexibility of the NowSMS product comes a lot of complexity. That complexity is great for the core technical audience of NowSMS, but it is overwhelming for those that are newer to SMS and MMS messaging technologies, or that have less demanding messaging needs.

The NowSMS Lite edition is designed to send and receive SMS and MMS messages using a single GSM (GRPS/EDGE/3G) modem.

The NowSMS Lite Edition allows clients to submit SMS messages to NowSMS for delivery via the GSM modem, using either the HTTP or SMPP protocols. NowSMS Lite also provides examples for submitting SMS messages from Java, PHP and a command line interface.

Received SMS messages can be routed to an application program using either HTTP, SMPP, or a command-line interface.

The NowSMS Lite Edition allows clients to submit MMS messages for delivery via the GSM modem, using either a proprietary HTTP interface that supports both HTTP GET and POST operations, or using the MM7 protocol. MM7 is a SOAP/XML based protocol that operates over HTTP POST. Additionally, NowSMS Lite provides examples for submitting MMS messages from Java, PHP and a command line interface.

Received MMS messages can be routed from NowSMS Lite to an application program using either MM7, an HTTP interface optimised for PHP, or via a file/directory based interface.

Des has described the differences between NowSMS Lite and NowSMS (Heavy)very well.

I would just like to add that we also continue to offer our very generous upgrade path between the two products, if you purchase NowSMS Lite and subsequently need NowSMS we offer a full refund on the NowSMS Lite price against the purchase price of NowSMS if that purchase is made within the first year of owning the NowSMS Lite licence or in subsequent years if you have purchased a software upgrade agreeement.

The thinking behind this is that we want to continue to provide the best value we can to start up companies and and established companies that want to develop new services around existing mobile messaging infrastructure.

Hi,

I was trying to configure NowSMSListe ot be used with Seimens TC65 modem. for some reason the smsliste is failing to register the modem. I had used the same modem before with nowsms and it worked. Is there an additional configuration step I need to do? I am planning to purchase the smslite as it suits my development needs.

Hi Olga,

Yes. There are no limitations of sending SMS to a port number in NowSMS Lite ... it supports it the same was as the full version of NowSMS.

The only caveat is that the modem and mobile operator support port addressing. That's generally not a problem ... except there are some buggy modems (like when you use a Motorola phone as a modem) that don't support UDH. And there are some issues going across mobile operators in environments where there is a mix of both GSM and CDMA carriers.

So it is something that you should try to make sure it works properly for you in your environment. It's a very high probability that it will work ... but that's why we offer the trial version.

Hi,

What error message do you get?

We did find a problem with the initial release of NowSMS Lite in some environments where the configuration settings were not getting saved.

The modem test would be ok, but no messages would get sent.

It was a strange Windows security issue where the configuration program would see one set of configuration files, and the NowSMS service would see a different set of configuration files.

It was possible to get around this problem by running the NowSMS Lite configuration program with Administrative rights.

We corrected this problem in a 2009.07.17 release. So if this sounds like the type of problem that you are seeing, you may want to check the version number of NowSMS Lite. If it is earlier, uninstall, then re-install after downloading the latest version.

Note ... it may also be necessary to delete the files in Users\useracount\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\NowSMS directory. For some reason, when the configuration program was saving its configuration files, Windows was redirecting them here, but the service was reading them from ProgramData\NowSMS.

It's very possible that you're encountering a different problem ... I just mention that as a possibility, since you don't mention what the error is that you are encountering.

Hi Diego,

Yes, NowSMS Lite will work pretty much the same in that scenario.

I'd suggest you go ahead and download the NowSMS Lite trial version and give it a try.

If it says that the trial is expired because you previously used the NowSMS trial, then we can reset that for you. Send an e-mail to nowsms@nowsms.com with "Attention: Des" in the subject line ... include the "Installation Reference Code" displayed in NowSMS Lite.

The price is 195 pounds (UK currency). That price is good at least through the end of the year.

Hi TJ,

The only thing slower about Lite is that it can only send outbound via a sin gle modem.

I will ask our sales dept to followup and check if they have received an ema il from you (sometimes spam filters block legitimate email so I will ask the m to check). If they haven't replied I will ask them to, and if they have re plied I will ask them to resend.

Does the trial version of Lite have a limitation to how fast messages can be sent? (no more than 30 per minute for example?).

I've noticed when our queue gets about 60 it sends them out much slower.

Yes, I am not certain of the exact limit, but I believe there is a limit in that range.

Faster performance is only available in the full NowSMS product, which is licensed based upon message throughput.

Go into the Windows Control Panel, Phone & Modem options. Make sure that your modem appears in the list here. If it does not, you need to install the device drivers for you modem. (Some modems have a built-in USB drive that contains the software to be installed ... others ship with a CD or it needs to be downloaded from the manufacturer web site.)

If it does appear in the modem area of the Windows Control Panel, then it should appear in the list in the NowSMS Lite screen.

yes, offcourse the modem has already installed properly and shown at the windows-control panel-phone and modem. It recognized with name "HUAWEI mobile connect - 3G Modem #2" at COM10.

But when I run the now SMS lite, there's only 3 modem shows on the drop down list (Standard modem over bluetooth link, standard modem, and standard modem over bluetooth link #3).

Please advice. Thanks.

Hi Erwin,

Thanks for the follow-up. There should be a scroll bar with up and down arrows that allows you to scroll through the modems. Only 3 are displayed at a time.

This scroll bar only shows up if you click on the drop down indicator. (If you click on that arrow pointing down it should display the list with a scrollbar.)
