We have a Option Icon ATT branded modem, not the 225, I think it's a 600 series. We're testing sms and mms send and receive using the trial version of nowsms lite. We are able to successfully send SMS and MMS messages as well as receive SMS messages. The sim card in a phone will send and receive all message types without any issue but it seems we don't receive an SMS notification message for an MMS when we try receiving MMS. Or at least that would be my assumption. There isn't a lot of info in the smsdebug.log (attached) which we first sent an MMS, and then a follow up SMS. We've tried both the default 66.209.11.61 wap gateway as well as the recommended http://66.209.11.32:8080 address with the same results.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. If we get this working today, we'll be purchasing a license immediately for our project.

Hi Rob,

It's hard to say what the problem is, because it appears that the MMS notification message (which arrives via SMS) is never making it to the modem. Or if it is making it to the modem, it's not making it to NowSMS over the modem interface.

Have you tried putting the SIM card into the phone and verifying that you can receive MMS messages with the SIM card in a phone?

Sometimes operator systems need to be alerted to the fact that your device can handle MMS messages by having you first send an MMS message ... which it sounds like you have done.

In other cases, MMS support needs to be manually provisioned. But sometimes just connecting to the network with a phone that the operator recognizes is enough to get MMS support provisioned. So that's what I'd suggest trying with the SIM card in a device.

Did the SIM card originally come with the device? (That could be a problem, as most operators then assume the device is to be used as an internet modem, and they don't enable MMS support. Of course, it is odd that you are able to send in this case.)

Thanks for the response. The sim card came in a phone provisioned for data, voice, SMS and MMS. We have successfully tested inbound and outbound SMS and MMS messages from the phone with the same sim card. I'm now trying our same tests with the trial version of NowSMS, not lite. Getting the same results so far though. No initial notification message that I can see.

Willing to try whatever ideas anyone might have to get this thing going.

Thanks again.

Hi Rob,

I wish I had an idea ... or at least one that I was confident would work.

When the problem is that the MMS notification is never received, it's usually the case that the operator network is not delivering it.

Let me ask this ... put the SIM back into a phone for awhile. Send and receive a few MMS messages. Do the missing MMS messages ever make it to the phone, or are they lost in the ether?

A few things worth trying ...

Try setting "SMS Access" to "GPRS". Also try setting it to "GSM". (I believe that in NowSMS Lite, if it is set to "Default", it uses the "GSM" setting ... whereas in full NowSMS, it uses the modem's default setting.) I'd be very surprised if this makes a difference (and there is a strong possibility that the "GPRS" setting will block you from being able to send SMS).

Also try setting "SMS Message Storage" to "Direct to Modem" and see if this makes a difference. I have seen some modems that have problems delivering binary SMS messages unless they are pushed directly. I've never seen that problem with an Option modem though.

If you can get your hands on any other modems, that would be the best chance of success.

Thanks again for the responses. We were on a pretty tight timeline for this project and had to go a different direction yesterday to get things rolling. FYI we originally tried an unbranded Option Icon 225 based on the "excellent" rating in your modem blog. This modem would not run under it's default drivers, and when using the Windows default drivers would "fall asleep" and drop offline after about 5 minutes of inactivity. We were able to send and receive SMS but could not send or receive MMS. Per some earlier forum posts on the subject we attempted to flash the device to the latest firmware using downloads directly from Option. During the flash process there was an "Unrecoverable error" with the flashing utility and this bricked the modem. That's why we went with something different on the second try.

I would really like to get this functionality going again for future projects. Can you recommend a known working modem for use with NowSMS Lite and/or NowSMS on the ATT network, possibly in use by some of your customers?

Thanks again for the help.
