Hello,

We are using the Nowsms lite licensed version, which talks to a wavecom gsm modem.

The setup works fine for sometime (We are able to send and receive sms).

After a few hours though, we are neither able to send/receive sms. The log is pasted below:

02:04:44:531 [2] ModemTest: OK
02:09:46:062 [2] ModemTest: Standard 9600 bps Modem
02:09:46:312 [2] ModemTest: OK
02:14:48:187 [2] ModemTest: Standard 9600 bps Modem
02:14:48:437 [2] ModemTest: OK
02:18:08:109 [2] ReceiveModemCommand: Error - 3E4 -
02:18:08:109 [2] ReceiveModemCommand: CancelIo

We are unable to access the port through hyperterminal as well (Even after stopping the nowsms service).

Any inputs to solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Is this a USB modem or a serial modem?

I would suggest checking the manufacturer web site to see if there are any firmware updates available. It sounds like the modem firmware is locking up.

Here are some ideas/suggestions (aside from getting another modem):

Does restarting the PC correct the problem, or do you actually have to turn the modem off and back on again?

If restarting the PC corrects the problem, there is a hidden setting that can tell NowSMS to reboot the PC if a modem becomes unresponsive. To enable this setting, you must manually edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [Modem - Standard 9600 bps Modem] section header, add:

RebootOnModemError=Yes

Aside from this, the only suggestion that I have is that maybe it would help to slow down how quickly NowSMS is trying to talk to the modem. To do this, edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [SMSGW] header, add:

ModemMaxBytesPerSend=1

Another possibility is a bad modem cable (or port). You'd be surprised how many times these problems are cable related. Try plugging in to a different port, and definitely try a different cable.

P.S. - The location of the SMSGW.INI file varies depending on the version of Windows you are running.

For Windows Server 2003/2008, Vista and 7, it is in ProgramData\NowSMS.

For Windows XP, it is in the installation directory (normally Program Files\NowSMS or Program Files (x86)\NowSMS).

Thanks for the quick response Des.

This is a USB modem.
Rebooting the PC corrects the problem.

If we have to go in for a different modem, which model/make would you suggest?

Will try the settings you have suggested.

Thank You!

I've had good luck with Option ICON modems.

But that said, I use the RebootOnModemError=Yes setting with them as a safeguard also.
