Hi, I am using NowSMS Lite with a Teltonika 3G modem. I can send and receive SMS but not MMS. Already tried several combinations, including another operator (Oi and Claro), another PC and another OS (Win7 and Win XP). Logs attached. Please help. Thanks

Hi Ronaldo, RAS ERROR 619 is a generic error from Windows that indicates that the data connection fails. NowSMS was unable to establish a data connection to the APN that you specified. From your logs, I can see that you were trying to connect to the APN mms.claro.com.br with a username claro & password claro. Those appear to be the correct settings for Claro in Brasil. I'd recommend moving the SIM card from the modem to a phone and verifying that you can send/receive MMS using the SIM. I also notice one thing from your logs which may be important. The modem is reporting a very low signal strength. In the SMSDEBUG.LOG, during modem initialisation, we send the AT+CSQ command and report the result. Your modem is reporting back +CSQ: 10,99. It's the first number that is important ... and 10 is pretty low signal strength. I'd equate it to about "1 bar" of coverage. Generally speaking, for reliable data connections, you want to get this value into the 20's (it shouldn't go higher than 31). High teen values are also usually OK. If there is any way for testing that you can relocate a PC to an area with better mobile network coverage, that would be advisable. It would also be interesting to compare that value with what you see with the SIM card from the other provider. You will find AT+CSQ results reported in the SMSDEBUG.LOG file. -- Des NowSMS Support

Thanks, you were right, that SIM doesn't allow to send MMS, although it can establish a data connection. With a different SIM, same operator, the test passes, but still cannot send/receive MMS. Tested and worked on a nokia phone. There is a timeout error in the logs, attached. I will also try a different operator due to signal issues.

Hi Ronaldo, That is a message size issue. Many of the older proxies (WAP/WSP) have a problem when you get much over 300KB. We need to update our configuration files to prefer the WAP2/HTTP proxies. You can switch to the WAP2/HTTP proxy by changing the "WAP Gateway Address" field to http://200.169.126.10:8799 (include the http:// prefix as this tells the proxy type). -- Des NowSMS Support

Thanks for the fast reply. I changed the gateway to WAPGatewayIP=http://192.168.10.50:3128 (OI Operator). Lite can send MMS ok, but still can't receive MMS, I tried two different source mobiles, making sure they can send MMS. Please see the attached logs. Everything else is fine, including 2 way echo command.

Hi Ronaldo, Unfortunately, that is a mystery. The MMS delivery process is triggered by the receipt of an MMS notification message via SMS. This should show up initially as a binary SMS being received in the log files. Without that MMS notification message arriving via SMS, there can be no MMS delivery. Can you confirm that the SIM can receive MMS ok if it is put into a phone? There might be something necessary to be configured on the operator side to tell it that the device using this SIM can receive MMS messages. -- Des NowSMS Support P.S. - I should also mention that there is a bug in the current posted version of NowSMS Lite, where it does not properly process MMS notifications on some networks. There is an update available at http://www.nowsms.com/download/lite20110114.zip. This update isn't a solution for your problem, however, as I see no evidence of binary SMS messages being received, which would indicate these MMS notifications.

Des, I got a clue about the MMS issue, see the attached log. The sms received provides a URL and password to access the picture sent from another Claro phone via MMS. This only happens when sender and destination are Claro. Using modem Teltonika 3g. Tried from Oi to Claro with no success.

Hi Ronaldo, If you're getting a text based notification message, then this suggests that your provider does not have your account (SIM) enabled for MMS support. If you put that same SIM into a phone, can it retrieve proper MMS? -- Des NowSMS Support

Hi Ronaldo, There is no way to signal the operator system that the device supports MMS (other than by sending an MMS, which you have done). If the SIM can receive MMS when it is in a Nokia phone ... but when the same SIM is put into a modem, instead of an MMS the phone receives an SMS with a text message telling the user to connect to a web site with a password ... then this suggests that the operator must be looking at the IMEI (equipment serial number - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Mobile_Equipment_Identity) of the receiving device and using that to determine whether or not the device supports MMS. Generally speaking, it's a bad idea, because it assumes that the operator system knows about every GSM device manufactured. But that's the only thing I can think of, as there is no separate network registration that is performed for a device to confirm MMS support. Most likely your operator has some way to override this, or add additional devices that support MMS, but finding a technical contact inside of the operator that would understand this and that could do this is challenging to say the least. This is outside of my area of expertise, and definitely a grey area, but I have heard that it is possible to change IMEI values with some modems. -- Des NowSMS Support |
