Hi Alon,

Mobile operators will generally provision which devices are able to receive MMS messages. They assume that a modem cannot receive MMS messages because it does not have an MMS client running on it.

They also assume that modems will be primarily used for broadband internet access, not for messaging.

We usually recommend provisioning a SIM card for a phone, and then moving it to a modem.

Verify that you can send/receive MMS messages with the SIM card in a phone before moving it to a modem.

When you send an MMS message to a modem, the first thing that you'll see is the receipt of one or two (usually two) binary SMS messages. Those are the trigger for MMS message delivery, and NowSMS needs to see them to then proceed with the MMS message delivery process.

(More conceptual info on how MMS works can be found here: http://www.nowsms.com/faq/how-mms-works)

hey,
thanks for your reply.
I run that test : took the sim into a cell phone -got a mms message
switched back sent sms and mms messages and got only one sms message- the one i sent

the receive mms is checked
any ideas?
do i need to "unlock" the modem?
I noticed the that test in the modem tab passes only when the modem is not connected to the internet .
also when "use non-standard data...for mms" is not select or is selected it change a thing"

I didn't notice earlier that you are using NowSMS Lite. There is a bug in the 2010.11.04 release, where it cannot properly parse some MMS notification messages (binary SMS), which prevents MMS messages from being received.

An update for that release can be found here:

http://www.nowsms.com/download/lite20110114.zip

However ... if you are encountering this specific problem, you would see binary SMS messages being received on the modem.

If you are not seeing these binary SMS messages, this tells me that you are experiencing a different problem. There are some mobile operators that appear to refuse to deliver MMS notifications to some modems.

There was a recent thread from someone on the Claro network in Brazil (http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/33365/70016.html), and it appeared that no MMS notifications would ever get routed to their modem, whatever we tried. But if they moved the SIM to a phone, the messages would be received. We speculated that the mobile operator is tracking the IMEI of the modem device, and will only deliver MMS notifications if they believe the device can support MMS.

Hopefully the problem that you are experiencing is the bug issue, and you have just not noticed the received binary SMS messages.

If that is not it, I'd be curious to see an SMSDEBUG.LOG from your system. (Checkbox options to enable are on the "Serial #" page of the configuration.) Send an SMS and MMS to your system.

Also, try using the NowSMS web interface to send a WAP Push message to the modem phone number. Just include any URL and some simple text. I'd be curious whether or not that binary message can be received by the modem.

Hey,

I'm attaching the operators mms setting .
the sim card I have is gen 3.5 it uses UMTS not GPRS. Is that an issue?

I switched from lite to nowsms gateway v2010.11.04
this mms.setting is also attached

Also I notice that when the modem is connected NOWSMS modem test fails .

this is what I got in smsdebug after sending one sms and one mms

21:34:40:192 [2] ModemReceiveMessages: Decoding received message index 0 from message storage SM
21:34:40:215 [2] ModemReceiveMessages: 07917952140230F2240C9179522464986900001140601243732103D3F61C

21:36:39:082 [2] ModemTest: 3GModem port
21:36:39:170 [2] ModemTest: OK

As you can see mms message did not send any sms message.
the operator says that since the sim is UMTS 3.5 it is not sending sms like is gprs

I also changed the modem network mode from utms gprs , sent sms and\mms and got the same result

ideas?

Hi Again ,
The modem I use was supplied by the operator.

Is possible that if I buy a modem in let say amazon it will work?

Is there an issue with 3G modems?

Hi Alon,

It's possible that this modem has a problem processing binary messages. That's why I was curious about it sending a WAP Push message to itself.

Of course, it is also possible that the operator might have some blocking of mobile orginated WAP push on their network, but usually when we see this, the send attempt returns an error.

You might want to try sending the WAP Push to other devices (phones) to see if they receive it. If other phones can receive the WAP Push, but the modem cannot, then my conclusion would be that the modem has a problem with binary messages.

That's not a problem that we see very frequently, but yes, I do think it would be worth trying a different modem.
