Hi,

I'd like to know following.

- Is there any max number of SMS/MMS that can be sent with trial version? e.g 1000 messages, 10,000 messages. After that, it stops working.

- If I send MMS message to multiple recipients using BCC list, how does it send the request to Telco? Will it be single request or broken down into x number of requests with 1 request containing x numbers?

Thanks in advance for your attention.

Hi,

1. There is no max limit of total messages in the software.

2. Different versions of NowSMS handle sending MMS messages via a modem connection with some differences.

In the early days of MMS, we had problems with some operator systems in that they had a limit of how many recipients they would accept for an MMS message.

So, we set a default limit of 5 recipients per MMS when sending out via a modem connection. This means that if you send to 10 recipients, the recipient list will be split into two, with two messages being sent to 5 recipients each.

Earlier this year, we decided that this default limit was too low and changed it to 20 recipients (version 2012.06.19 and later).

This default limit can be adjusted by editing the configuration file for the outbound MMS routing ... /VASPOUT/routename/VASP.INI. Under the [VASP] header, specify MaxRecips=### to adjust this per MMS message recipient limit.

If you do adjust this limit, be sure to test with your mobile operator to make sure you do not exceed any limits they impose.

As you are using NowSMS Lite, the VASP.INI file I am referring to would be located at:

\ProgramData\NowSMS\VASPOUT\nowsmslite\VASP.INI

NowSMS Lite requires a GSM modem installed in the computer running the software. The GSM modem must have an active SIM card for a mobile operator through which you will be sending messages.

Des, is there a way to "hook up" the GSM modem to the web, say via my router/modem, so incoming and outgoing SMS messages bypass cell towers, at least on my end of the SMSC?

Hi Matthias,

There are SMS service providers that can be connected to over the internet. (However, NowSMS Lite only supports GSM modems for connectivity.)

GSM modems connect to the mobile phone network to send and receive messages. They require an active SIM card with an active account.

You can connect to a NowSMS install remotely over the internet, but the modem needs to be directly connected to the PC running NowSMS.

Des, what I'm trying to do is bypass the cell towers all together... I wanna hook up my GSM modem with SIM card directly to my cable modem so I can send and receive messages through the internet lines and not the cell towers (I understand they still go through SMSCs). I want to do this with a real cell number not a virtual number like Google Voice. I want to do this also using NowSMS so I can use its features. Any suggestions on how to do this (if it's possible) or what providers allow a SMS HTTP connection? Thanks,
Matthias

Hi Matthias,

The short answer is that a GSM modem doesn't support that type of connection.

(The longer answer is that there is a device called a femtocell which acts as a mini cell tower getting its connection to the mobile network over the internet. It's something you have to get from your mobile operator, not something you can buy separately and activate on your own. They are designed more for handling voice calls not modems, so I do not know how well this would work. It is not something we would recommend ... I mention it only for completeness.)

On the subject of SMS providers, there are hundreds, if not thousands. How many of those are reliable is open to question, but it is too difficult to maintain a list of.
