We recently upgraded the Android phone we are using to send SMS/MMS messages from NowSMS Lite. The app will now not run. It opens and then immediately closes with the message "NowSMS Modem keeps stopping". The phone is a Google Pixel now running Android 9. I'm assuming the app does not work with Android 9? Is a new version available? Thanks. Mike

Hi Mike, We have not tested with Android 9 yet. There is an updated app version that was posted about 4-6 weeks ago. Have you tried that version? — Des NowSMS Support

We are using the latest version that is available in the Google Play Store. It doesn't run in Android 9 for us.

Ok, we will investigate. Unfortunately, our Android expert is on holiday this week, so it may take a few extra days.

Hi Mike, Sorry this follow-up took so long. Here is what we found. Upgrading existing devices to Android 9, we did not encounter any problems. However, new installs on Android 9 would crash. The crash is caused by a permissions issue. If you go into Android Settings, Apps, and review permissions for the NowSMS Modem app to turn on permissions for Phone and SMS, it will resolve the crash. We are working on an update to address this. Interestingly, the 2017 version (available on our "Free Trial" downloads page) does not have this problem. Newer apps on newer Android versions must explicitly ask for permission every time they want to do something involving SMS, or get the user to check "always allow". Previously, the permissions were permanently enabled at install time. Apologies for the inconvenience. -bn
