Hi,

I've alway the same issue. What configuration do I need (in terms of terminal, data card, ...) to forward my mobile phone MMS to my mail.
I thought that Now MMS was able to forward the MMS I receive on my phone to an email address as I succeed to forward the SMS to my mailbox but it doesn't seems to be the case ... I currently don't understand how it could work as no Terminal are able to forward the SMS "MMS notif" to a PC.

Do you have an idea ?

Fabien

Hi Fabien,

As I stated in the other thread, you need to use a dedicated GSM/GPRS modem device in order to receive MMS messages with NowSMS:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/11817.html

In our documentation, when we talk about GSM Modems, we also mention this several times:

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/configuring_smsc_connec tions/GSM_Modems.htm

quote:

A GSM modem can be an external modem device, such as the Siemens MC35 or Wavecom FASTRACK external modems. Insert a GSM SIM card into this modem, and connect the modem to an available serial port on your computer.

A GSM modem can be a PC Card installed in a notebook computer, such as the Sierra Wireless Aircard 750.

A GSM modem could also be a standard GSM mobile phone with the appropriate cable and software driver to connect to a serial port or USB port on your computer. Any phone that supports the “extended AT command set” for sending/receiving SMS messages, as defined in the ETSI GSM 07.05 Specification can be supported by the Now SMS/MMS Gateway.

A dedicated GSM modem (external or PC Card) is usually preferable to a GSM mobile phone. This is because of some compatibility issues that can exist with mobile phones. For example, if you wish to be able to receive inbound MMS messages with your gateway, most GSM phones will only allow you to send MMS messgaes. This is because the mobile phone automatically processes received MMS message notifications these messages, without forwarding them via the modem interface.

Maybe my terminology is confusing you? So I will try to clarify.

When I say "dedicated" GSM/GPRS modem device, I am talking about a device whose only purpose is to be a "GSM/GPRS modem".

This is in contrast to a mobile phone with GSM/GPRS modem capabilities. A mobile phone with GSM/GPRS modem capabilities is not considered to be a "dedicated" GSM/GPRS device, as modem capability is not the only (or even primary) purpose of the device, but more of an added capability.

Now that I think about it, the terminology that we use ... "dedicated GSM/GPRS modem device" ... sounds strange. I don't know why we say "dedicated" ... but I also don't know what other word would be more appopriate.

So that we avoid further confusion, let me just say this:

1.) A phone acting as a GSM/GPRS modem will not allow you to receive MMS messages with NowSMS.

2.) A "dedicated" GSM/GPRS modem device (which is not a phone) will allow you to receive MMS messages with NowSMS. (As long as the device does not have design shortcomings that prevent it from forwarding any received SMS messages over the GSM modem interface, such as the Nokia D211/D311.)

"Dedicated" GSM modems are devices like the Siemens MC35 Terminal, various modems from Wavecom and Multitech. And there are also various PC card modems, where I am partial to the modems from Sierra Wireless.

If you are considering any other modem device, I'd suggest doing a search on the forum here to find references to it and see what others might be experiencing.

That depends on who your mobile operator is. Check with your mobile operator ... if you are in the US, then there is a good chance that this service is available. However, outside of the US, it is rare because billing for SMS and MMS is different.

Bottom line, I don't have an easy answer for you. This is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway software product, so my focus here is on support for NowSMS. (NowSMS has e-mail to SMS/MMS capabilities, but they require a GSM/GPRS modem or an SMS service provider, so it's not a solution for a quick one-off sending of a picture.)

My quick advice would be to upload the picture to a web server. Then on the browser of the phone, enter the URL to fetch the picture from the web server. (This is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway product, so I don't really have the time to offer any more detailed advice that is not related to our product.)
