Hi users,

I have recently tried using Nokia 6610 as GSM modem device for receiving MMS. But wasn't successful, i received mms on phone but i haven't got the notification to the third party tool.I have read the previous messages of that phone doesn't give the notification event to nowsms.

Will NowSMS trial version allow me to receive MMS using nokia 6610 ( i used Nokia DKU-5 usb cable connected to PC).

If not, can anyone suggest me the dedicated GSM modem device by which i can receive MMS using Nowsms.

Please help me out. I could receive sms using Nokia 30 M2M gsm connectivity terminal, but i enquired with nokia it didn't have support for mms. I tried sending MMS to the nokia 30 gsm }device which had sim-card (gprs,mms enabled)in it but i was getting sms saying collect your mms on this url with this key.

Thanx in advance.

Hi Pranab,

I am not aware of any mobile phone that will allow MMS messages to be received over the GSM modem interface. The problem is that the MMS client in the mobile phone always gets in the way and prevents the message from being forwarded out the GSM modem interface.

We seem to see most customers using the Siemens MC35 as a GSM/GPRS modem for sending/receiving MMS.

But that said, I would expect your Nokia 30 to work. The fact that you are receiving an SMS message indicating that there is an MMS waiting via a web URL is not related to the modem ... this just indicates that the device is not provisioned for MMS on the operator MMSC. Put the SIM card into a MMS compatible phone ... get the SIM card provisioned for MMS and verify that you can send and receive MMS with the SIM card in the phone. (You may need to call your operator to get MMS provisioned for the SIM ... although with some operators they auto-provision the first time you actually send an MMS.)

Once you've verified that you can send/receive MMS using the SIM ... then put the SIM card back into the modem, and try again.

Hello Bryce,

Thank you for the reply.
I actually meant gsm/gprs modem. I can send and receive MMS using nokia 6610 i.e., from mobile phone. I am only interested in receiving MMS so i guess the vasp setting, MMSC URL etc are redundant, purely the gateway address etc shud work. I could receive / send sms , send ota push to, using nowsms with nokia 6610. Atleast now i am no more interested in mobile phone as modem. Rather i would go for proper external / pc-card gprs modem. I did rtfm'ing on this site, found these gprs modems.

External GPRS Modem (which support ETSI GSM 7.05 and 7.07)

1> Siemens MC35 (you say its MC45??)
2> WaveCom FastTrack WISMO M1203A (rather M1200 series and M2100 series).

PC-CARD Modems (which support ETSI GSM 7.05 and 7.07)

1> Sierra Wireless Aircard 750.
2> Sony Ericsson GC79 Wireless LAN CARD.

I am planning to purchase Nowmms, assuming it can be used to communicate with gprs modem as well as MMSC server. Why i am purchasing gprs modem is the mobile phone can't initiate dialup for connectivity(i.e. gprs AT *99#) simultaneously.

Hence i request you to tell me which gprs modem (external / PC-card) would be best option with NOWMMS. My SIM Card uses orange network, its gprs and mms activated.

-Regards

Hi Pranab,

My mistake ... I was typing faster than I was thinking on Monday ... where I made several posts referring to the Siemens MC45 (an embedded GSM modem device), when I should have been referring to the Siemens MC35 (a stand-alone external GSM modem terminal). I've gone back and edited the 4 posts with the mistake on Monday to avoid future confusion.

I don't believe that any of the external modems support simultaneous SMS and GPRS access. With the external modems, NowSMS needs to initiate *99# to allocate a GPRS connection, and SMS access becomes unavailable until the GPRS connection is again dropped.

The Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 does support simultaneous SMS and GPRS. I use one of those in my laptop.

I haven't had any feedback on the GC79 yet. It looks like a very nice card ... the question is whether SMS functionality is still available while the GPRS connetion is active.

Lohith,

Your mobile phone needs to have the capability to be used as a modem, and it must support the AT commands defined in ETSI GSM 07.05 for sending/receiving SMS. (Check the manufacturer web site for your phone model for details.)

Some phones require a special cable (serial or USB) to connect to the PC. Some phones support infrared or bluetooth connections.

Most higher end mobile phones have this support, while it is less common in lower end mobile phones. Note that phones based upon the Symbian OS (Nokia 6600/7650/3650, SonyEricsson P800/P900) can only be used to send SMS in this manner, and not receive SMS. Also note that Motorola seems to not have incorporating this functionality as standard in as many of their phone models as other manufacturers.

I don't know what you mean by that. But if you are asking if there are dedicated GSM modem devices, as opposed to using a GSM phone as a modem, there certainly are.

The Siemens MC35 is popular ... Wavecom modems are popular.

I am using Motorola c350 handset as USB modem. it is performing all the AT operations EXCEPT the AT+CMGS or any message sending command.
Questions-->
1. Anybody knows how to send sms using AT commands.
2. Do we have such message sending command for Motorola c350?

3. Do we have different commands for sending messages on different phones.

Thanks in advance.

Motorola seems to have released very few phones that support the standard AT command set for sending/receiving SMS messages.

They may have their own non-standard command set ... but as the ETSI GSM 07.05 standard has been around for quite some time, I find it more likely that they simply did not implement an AT interface for sending/receiving SMS messages in that phone.

Again, this is very common for Motorola phones.

For whatever reason, Motorola seems to be behind other manufacturers when it comes to including this GSM modem capability in their phones.

From past posts, I have seen someone using NowSMS with the Motorola P260, which did work.

But I have seen postings from others who have tried the T720, T720i, and C350, which did not work.

You could try asking Motorola if they have a proprietary set of commands for these devices, but I am not aware of any.

Hey all
I have Motorolla C350, I want to use it as a modem on linux.

I've got the usb cable, setup usb-modem and the acm stuff; kernel detects the phone and I can access it through /dev/ttyACM0.

I'm using wvdial, and it initializes the modem, but when it starts dialing, it says NO carrier

---
root@zelta:/home/omi# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S6=9 S0=0 &C0 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S6=9 S0=0 &C0 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDTxxx-xxx-xxxx
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDTxxx-xxx-xxxx
NO CARRIER
--> No Carrier! Trying again.
--> Sending: ATDTxxx-xxx-xxxx
--> Waiting for carrier.

and so on.
When I'm listening on the speaker of the phone, when wvdial reports "no-carrier", I hear the same sound as hang up button produces.

What should I configure so it would dial with C350?

best regards

Hi i want to write a program which accept SMS and accordingly send replay back to the SMS sender. I already did this with j2me and wireless messaging api but it's not working because Nokia 6600 doesn't allow j2me to access default port of device .
So is it possible to write an application that receive all SMS coming on my cell phone and send reply accoringly.
So is it possible to use nowSMS to accept sms from cell phone having GSM Modem and handover to my application written in J2SE(or any other)accept replay and send it back ...

Thanking you in advance

Well, the Nokia 6600 won't let applications like NowSMS receive SMS messages over the GSM modem interface either. Basically, any of the Symbian phones do not allow applications to receive SMS messages over the GSM modem interface.

If you wanted to setup another cell phone, and have NowSMS receive messages addressed to it, and then have NowSMS forward the message to your application on the appropriate port that would be possible. However, you would lose the original sender information in the process (although you could put the original sender information into the text of the message).

All in all, it's awkward. The J2ME SMS interface seems to be designed for for program to program communications rather than general purpose.

You might want to look at the following thread which has more discussions on this topic, as this current thread has gone off-topic:

This is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway.

We do support the Siemens MC35 terminal as a GSM modem.

The API for sending/receiving SMS messages is HTTP based:

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/sending_messages/sendin g_text_messages.htm

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/sending_messages/url_pa rameters_for_sending_messages.htm

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/2_way_sms_support.htm

If you are looking for the direct API for interfacing with GSM modems, this is the ETSI GSM 07.05 specification, available from www.etsi.org.

Sara,

I'm sorry, but this is the support forum for NowSMS, not Kannel.

We generally recommend that with Wavecom modems you try using the "Standard 19200 bps Modem" driver from Windows, and then configure NowSMS to interface with the modem through that driver.

Good luck. That device has a built-in CDMA phone.

This is like asking how to convert a CDMA phone into a GSM phone ... where the answer is to chuck the CDMA phone in the bin and buy one that supports GSM.

Sorry, but these are two different technologies.
