Hi, I can't send mms through my tc35. I've got a Virgin Mobile sim card in it and it works great for sms but I can't send mms. I've talked to Virgin support and they won't help. Does anyone know what needs to be done or do I have to get a mobile phone to use instead of hte tc35?
thanks for any help

What MMS settings are you using?

I saw you posted over in the settings thread, and here are the settings that I have found for Virgin Mobile UK:

Virgin Mobile UK (not tested)

APN: goto.virginmobile.uk
User ID: user
Password: (blank/unused)
Proxy: http://193.30.166.1:8080
MMS Server URL: http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002

Also note that to make sure that MMS is enabled for the SIM, it's a good idea to try putting it into a mobile phone to verify that you can send MMS with the SIM when using a phone.

Assuming that it works ok in a phone, and you try the settings above without success, enable the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG on the NowSMS "Serial #" configuration dialog, and post that file after attempting to send an MMS message.

See http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/mms_notifications_and_c ontent/Connecting_to_operator_MMSC.htm

Just use those settings above when you get to the MMS settings part.

Thanks, I've entered the details but get this error message when I hit the Test Connection button:

Connection Failed
RAS Error 633
The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.

Any ideas?

What if you go into Phone & Modem options from the Windows control panel ... select Modems ... go to the Diagnostics page ... and "Query Modem"?

Does that return an error?

It sounds like another application might already have the COM port open.

My only guesses would be:

1.) It could be NowSMS itself. If you define the modem to the SMSC list as "COMx:", and then define it by the modem driver name under the "MMS Settings", then NowSMS doesn't realise that these are the same modems. In this case, change the modem definition in the "SMSC" list to use the named modem driver instead of going direct to the COM port. (Or, in the "MMS Settings", specify "Modem Used" = the COM port setting.)

2.) Some mobile phone related software like Nokia PC Suite might be detecting the modem and automatically opening it. Disable any software that you might have which could be trying to interface with a mobile phone.

I changed the settings as you outlined in point 1)
Now I get this message:

Connection Failed
RAS Error 777
The connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order.

Does this shed any more light on the matter?

That error usually means bad settings ... either wrong GPRS APN ... or invalid user id/password.

Doublecheck that your settings match the ones that I described above.

But also, have you tried the SIM in a phone to verify that it can send MMS?

I've heard that Virgin does not automatically enable MMS access for their SIMs. So even though you've talked to them, it would be a good sanity check to verify that you can actually send an MMS using the SIM in a phone.

This is what I have done.
Open NowSMS/MMS Gateway.
click on SMSC tab
Select COM1:
Click on Porperties
Click on MMS Settings.

I have the following info in the boxes:
Network Connection: Modem: Standard 14400bps Modem
WAP Gateway IP Address: http://193.30.166.1:8080
Modem Used: COM1

I don't have any settings for:
MMS Server URL:
GPRS APN:

Sorry again, I'm just being completely dense. I've now entered the APN and MMS server URL settings:

Now I get this error again:

RAS Error 777
The connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order.

Ok, that does make it a lot more difficult to troubleshoot.

First, make sure that you entered "user" in the "Login Name" field below where you entered the "GPRS APN".

Next, what we need to do is to try to troubleshoot this external of NowSMS. So here's what I'd do.

Go into Phone & Modem options in the Windows Control Panel. Go to the "Modems" tab. Highlight "Standard 14400bps Modem" and press "Properties".

Go to the "Advanced" tab and for "Extra Initialization Commands" enter:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","goto.virginmobile.uk"

(include the quotes in the above string)

Press "OK" to save these settings. You can then press "OK" again to close the previous dialog.

Next, go to your Windows Start menu, and select "Connect to". There should be an existing entry created by NowSMS titled "NowSMS - Standard 14400bps Modem", select it.

Windows should display a prompt for a phone number, and possibly a username and password. (If the username and password prompt are missing, select "Properties", go to the "Options" tab and enable "Prompt for name and password".)

Enter "user" as the "User Name".

Leave "Password" blank.

Enter "*99#" as the phone number to dial.

Try to connect. Does this work, or does it also return an error?

If it returns an error, then either MMS is not enabled for the SIM, or we have the wrong settings.

If it works, but NowSMS doesn't work, then something about the settings configured in NowSMS is not right. I'd like to see a screen shot for the MMS settings configured in NowSMS. And I would also like you to enable the "MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG" on the "Serial #" page of the configuration. After enabling that setting, try connecting again, and then post the resulting MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG file that is generated.

I get this dialog box:

Opening port...

Error 633. The Modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not conffigured properly.

I tried stopping the NowSMS service and I got this dialog box:

Connecting through ...

Error 692. There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)

Does that help?

While NowSMS is running, the SMS service is talking to the modem. So that part is normal.

The MMS bit requires a GPRS data connection, however. And all of this is suggesting that the settings we are using are not correct, or the SIM is not provisioned for MMS access.

At the point where things fail, we are only trying to connect to the GPRS APN "goto.virginmobile.uk" with a username of "user" and a blank password.

This connection is failing. Windows reports a hardware failure ... but my experience is that this type of error is generally a login failure connecting to the specified GPRS APN, and not a true hardware failure.

I've double checked these settings at various web sites, and they appear to be correct.

I'm not sure what else to try.

I think I would lean toward putting the SIM into a phone, and trying with a phone. Virgin has a service where they can send an OTA to your phone with the correct settings. See http://www.virginmobile.com/mobile/services/settings/index.jsp

Then, if the phone still doesn't work (which I expect it won't), then I'd try Virgin support again.

I suspect that something needs to be provisioned on their end to allow you to have access.

But I guess before you try that ... double check everything in my earlier post. Make sure you have that "Extra Initialisation Command" defined for the modem in Windows. And verify that you are sending "user" as the user name, with a blank password.

The only other thing that I could think of would be to enable the logging for the modem. This is in the "Diagnostics" area for the modem under "Phone & Modem Options" in the Windows Control Panel. There is a checkbox for "Append to log".

After you try to connect to "NowSMS - Standard 14400 bps Modem", use the "View Log" option in that diagnostics area ... and cut & paste that info here (or upload it as a file).

That might give us another idea. But I'm really thinking that it's a settings issue where the SIM is not properly enabled for MMS access. Maybe try having them also enable WAP (since it looks like the same APN is used for this with Virgin).

P.S. - It also might not hurt to de-install the modem driver.

Reboot the computer.

Then re-install the "Standard 33600 bps Modem" driver instead.

I usually use the "33600" version with different modems, although I don't expect that it would make a difference.

But maybe something is wrong with the way that the modem driver is configured, and re-installing will make a difference.

(I think this is a longshot, but Microsoft recommends this de-install/re-install as part of their troubleshooting for this particular error code.)

Hi Bryce, thanks for all your help.
I tried looking at the log. when I stopped the NowSMS service and hit the Query Modem button I got these details:
ATQ0V1E0 - OK
AT+GMM - TC35
AT+FCLASS=? - (0,1,2)
AT#CLS=? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT+GCI? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
AT+GCI=? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED
ATI1 - OK
ATI2 - OK
ATI3 - OK
ATI4 - OK
ATI5 - OK
ATI6 - OK
ATI7 - OK

I don't know what they mean but they might shed some light on the issue. I'll try the de-install/re-install thing.
Thanks again

Kev,

Those are all pretty normal responses.

What about that modem log after you tried to connect with NowSMS?

Could you post it?

Ok, that's not the type of log I was expecting to see.

Normally, it would look like something this:

But I do see that data like you describe will be in the log if you use the "Query Modem" function.

Make sure the checkbox next to "View log" is checked. Hit Ok to save that setting.

Try to use the "Connect to" option in Windows to connect to "NowSMS - Standard 14400 bps Modem" again.

Then go back into "View log", and it should have some entries more like what I show above.

This suggests that the modem is in use by another application. (So make sure NowSMS is not running, because the SMS gateway will have the port open ... the SMS gateway only releases the port when you do a "test connection" for the GPRS test.)

Hi Bryce, I made sure that NowSMS was not running then did a test which worked ok, then tried Querying the Modem. The log reported the same as before. I really appreciate all your help on this but unfortunately we need a solution quickly. It looks like we'll have to get a mobile phone to use instead of the tc35. Do you have any recommendations?

Hi Kev,

That is crazy. I don't know if there's something corrupt in the driver, a problem with the port, or maybe the device itself is experiencing problems.

For phones that can be used as modems, I lean toward SonyEricsson devices. The K700 and K750 are relatively inexpensive, decent phones, and decent for use as a modem. I believe the K750 includes a cable in the standard packaging (at least mine did), whereas I don't think the K700 included a cable.

Can NowSMS talk to the modem without a modem driver (i.e., configure it to talk to COM1: directly).

If you're not able to get a response back from the modem at all ... then I'd suspect either the modem has no power, or there is a problem with the serial cable.

actually, since my post, i've sorted out the problem, was the serial cable.
Thanks anyway
