Hi, I'm using NowSMS v2006.03.09. I kept having RAS 718 error and occassionally RAS 734 error. Below is the log for 718 and 734:

Below is the mmsc that I'm connecting to:

• Server URL – http://172.16.14.20:8002/
• GRPS setting:
Gateway – IP address – 172.16.14.10
APN – miworld
Login ID – 65
Password – user123

I'm using Wavecom Fastrack 1206B-ON. Using AT+CGMR, I get:

641_09gg.Q2406B 1328940 111903 18:23

This showed that the firmware shouldn't have problem supporting gprs. I've installed the modem as a generic 9600 bps modem. (Modem: Standard 9600 bps Modem)

I've tested my SIM card on a mobile phone to be able to connect up and send MMS.

Hope someone will be able to help us out soon as we're evaluating if NowSMS is able to meet our project requirements.

Thanks & Rgds

PS: Below is the modemlog if it can help with you guys diagnose the problem:

Basically the GPRS connection is being refused.

Error 718 is a PPP timeout. Error 734 is PPP terminated (which generally occurs with GPRS when the host rejects the connection).

NowSMS should have created a RAS dial-up connection titled "NowSMS - Standard 9600 bps Modem". What happens if you try to connect to it manually using a phone number of *99#, and the username and password that you specified above?

(The settings all look correct, based upon what I can see at the operator web site.)

Do you have another device that you can use to verify that you can put the SIM in from the modem, and verify that you can send MMS ok from the device?

Hi Bryce,

When I dial using the NowSMS - Standard 9600 bps Modem and username (65), password (user123), I get the error : "Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated." Is there anything I need to change on the settings before dialing ?

I've tried sending SMS using the same SIM card on the mobile phone and it works just fine.

Below is what happens when I use Hyperterminal to perform the dailing:

AT+CGDCONT?
+CGDCONT: 1,"IP","miworld",,0,0

Hi Zell,

What about MMS using the SIM card in the mobile phone? (You might have tried this, but you mention SMS in your reply above, so I want to verify.)

For some reason the operator is refusing the connection, suggesting an invalid username and/or password (or the wrong APN). You get the initial "CONNECT", but an IP connection cannot be negotiated.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe for some reason the modem has become confused about PDP contexts (APNs). In Hyperterminal, try issuing the command AT+CGDCONT=1 ... this will clear the current APN setting. Then try connecting with NowSMS again (from NowSMS, not from the RAS entry that it created), and see if that works.

I've looked back through my notes, and most of the "734" problems that I've seen in the past are related to either a problem with the APN name, or username/password. However, I did find one problem report where the user was having this problem only when their local area network card was active. If they removed the network card, it connected without error. (See http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/9612.html)

I don't recall a resolution to that particular problem. However, I do recall a similar problem where a user could not connect when their network card was active ... and the problem was a conflict between the private IP addresses that the mobile operator assigns for GPRS connections and the private IP address range that was being used on the user network.

Again, this error is generally an APN/username/password problem ... but I think it is worth checking to see if you can connect ok without a LAN connection. The chance of there being a LAN card conflict is relatively small, but it has happened before.
