I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find any references to this device.

Does anyone know if the Sierra Aircard 860 is compatible for all send/recv of sms/mms? Also, whether the anticipated 875 will be as well?

Hi,

We've done limited testing with the Sierra Wireless Aircard 850 (and more extensive testing with the earlier model 750). The 850 was fine for sending/receiving SMS and MMS.

As far as I can tell, the primary difference between the 860 and the 850 is just that the 850 supports European UMTS/WCDMA frequencies (2100Mhz), while the 860 supports North American UMTS/WCDMA frequencies (850/1900Mhz).

The 875 (which I don't believe is released yet) will go triband on the UMTS/WCDMA frequencies, and support up to 3.6 Mbps on HSDPA as opposed to 1.8 Mbps for the 850/860 models.

I haven't seen any technical docs that refer to the modem interface of the 875 yet, but I would expect them to continue to support the same modem interfaces as the 850 ... so it should be find for sending/receving SMS and MMS.

Thanks Bryce. Now, for the convenience of connecting the LAN to a cellular network, I'm considering the Linksys WRT54G3G. It's a router that has a PCMCIA slot for 3G cards. It can take an Aircard, for example.

This means that the nowsms server would not itself be required to dial-up to the cell network, and would see WAN hosts as though through the "regular Internet". Would this work?

Thanks again.

Hi Joseph,

You wouldn't be able to receive MMS using that type of setup ... because the MMS notification part comes in over SMS, not IP.

You could send MMS with this setup. The following thread talks about configuring NowSMS to send MMS via a network connection instead of having NowSMS initiate the modem connection: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/2265.html
