HI

I have connected a Siemans MC35 GPRS modem to a Windows XP machine. I have installed the Siemans driver for this modem. You can query the modem in Windows control panel and it seems to to respond correctly.

I then started the Gateway program v2006.03.09 and selected the SMCS tab to add the modem. I selected the gsm modem type and added the correct modem in the drop down list.

When I try to test and add the modem it responds with the error messages: +CMS ERROR 500.

I have tested the sim - and it also appears to be working. Any suggestions as to why this doesn't work would be appreciated.

Steve

Hi Steve,

NowSMS displays the "+CMS ERROR 500" when you try to add the modem to the SMSC list?

What is the rest of the error text? (I ask, because I've never seen this error code appear when attempting to add a modem ... however it is quite a common error when sending messages.)

Is the SIM card configured to require a PIN? Can you remove the PIN?

As far as I know the SIM doesn't require a PIN number. I have tested the SIM by placing it in a mobile phone and it worked fine.

The rest of the error when adding the phone said that the phone was not a SMS/GPRS phone +CMS ERROR 500. ( sorry can’t quite remember the message exactly )

Just for extra info:

The driver I am using for the modem is the Siemens AG wireless MC35 driver, dated 20/02/2003.

This was working fine, the problem appeared when we tried to move it over from one machine to another, that’s when the add modem failed. As we couldn’t add the modem to the new machine we tried the ‘Test’ on the original machine and that also failed. Even though the test failed the modem continued to work and send messages.

Steve,

I wish I had an explanation for you. I find it very puzzling that the modem seems to be working for sending messages, but the test fails. That suggests that the problem is somehow sporadic.

If the error message is "Modem does not support SMS -- (additional error info)", then this means that the modem is returning an error to the AT command "AT+CSMS=0".

If it's working, then I'd probably leave well enough alone, but I'd be curious if the test failures seem to be sporadic.

I'd also be curious ... if you open up a HyperTerminal connection to the serial port ... do you get an OK or ERROR response if you issue the AT+CSMS=0 command manually. (Also what about AT+CMGF=0)

HI

I've tried the program again this morning and the test passed and accepted the modem. I haven't done anything different to what I had done before.

The only thing that comes to mind is that the problem could be heat related. As the weather has been a bit cooler now where as at the start of the week it was quite hot.

Not sure if that was the problem but its working now so I'm happy.

Thanks for your help.

Steve

Hi,

I am also having this problem now and and "cooling the modem down" is not working for me :-)

I have the modem (Siemens mc35i) working on a test machine but when I wanted to move to the new production server, it starting giving me "modem does not support SMS" error messages so I can't add the modem.

Back on the testing machine, when you want to run tests, it gives the same error and NOWSMS even wants to remove the modem. However, everything still works - receiving SMS and MMS ( we are not sending anything so can't test that)

Running the commands given above in hyperterminal gives:
AT+CSMS=0 = +CMS ERROR: 500
AT+CMGF=0 = OK

I would like to know if this a modem or NOWSMS thing and how to go about fixing it.

We are only receiving SMS and MMS so if this is a check that NOWSMS does is only for sending SMS, then is there any way we can disable the check and carry on adding the modem, which we know (or maybe not) works?

Otherwise, if this a modem fault, then do we have grounds for a replacement?

Many thanks
Nick
