I am using NowSMS web interface to sent OTA OMA settings on a palm treo but its not working. Its as if the handset hasn't received anything. Does treo support OTA OMA settings. A more general question? Is there a place where I can find out which handset model support what settings(old or new or none). Thanks, Gaurav | |||

Hi Gaurav, I'm sorry, but I have no idea about whether or not the Treo supports OMA OTA settings. I don't have any specs on that particular device. Some devices do require the settings to be signed with a PIN. (Usually just a USERPIN ... although Microsoft Windows Mobile requires USERNETWPIN which is extremely inconvenient for all practical purposes.) Generally speaking, the device manufacturer would have a specifications sheet that specifies what OTA provisioning protocols they support. What we call "WAP OTA" is actually the "Nokia/SonyEricsson OTA Provisioning" format. This is an older format used by older Nokia phones (mostly pre-2003), and older SonyEricsson and Ericsson phones (mostly pre-2005). This format is not widely used by other manufacturers (although I've been told that a few older Samsung models did also implement support for this). What we call "OMA OTA" refers to "OMA Provisioning Content v1.1" (and v1.2 in recent updates, although the differences are very minor, and v1.2 is still not officially released). This format is standardised by the "Open Mobile Alliance", and has wide industry support ... whereas the other format was specific to Nokia and SonyEricsson. With hundreds, or I guess it's probably thousands, of different phone models out there, I don't have a list of which phones have support for either of these specs. It's a shame that most phone manufacturers themselves don't seem to do a good job of providing documentation of which protocols they support in all of the phones across their product lines. (Nokia and SonyEricsson seem to do a better job than the others in providing this type of information.) -bn |
